Me and 4 of my friends are preparing for our friend’s wedding and we need a good tailor we can trust.

Our sewing budget is 15k each.

On Thursday, just two days ago I had ₦40,000 left in my account.

I already knew it wouldn’t take me through the weekend, but I had one issue with my bank that I needed to fix before I could access more money.

Still, I decided to relax and wait till Monday before going. That was my first mistake.

From that same ₦40k, I still gave a friend some money because they genuinely needed help. I didn’t think too much about it.

But something inside me also wanted to test reality—to see what would happen if I allowed money to actually finish in my hand.

Would anyone show up for me the way I’ve shown up for others? Social experiment, you could call it.

By Friday evening, the money was gone. I had used it to sort out basic things—food, transport, small expenses. And remember, I still hadn’t gone to fix the bank issue.

That was when I started making calls.

Funny enough, I avoided calling the same friends I had helped recently. I didn’t want it to look like I was trying to remind them or guilt-trip them. I just wanted to see who would naturally offer to help me.

As expected, the response wasn’t encouraging. Some people gave me stories. Some aired my calls. Others didn’t even reply my messages.

That’s when it hit me deeply.

Never allow money to completely finish in your hand. Even if na ₦1,000 or ₦500, hold it like treasure. Because when it’s gone and you’re the one in need, the silence can be loud.

I’m not saying don’t help people. Help, but help with sense. Help, but still secure yourself. The same people you lend your last card to might not even pick your call when you’re down.

Moral lesson: Keep small money for body. Not everybody you help will remember you when tables turn.
