Something happened in my area last week and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
There’s this young couple that lives two streets away from me. Always holding hands. Always laughing. If you see them outside, you’ll even envy their love.
The wife is very respectful — the type that kneels to greet elders. Always smiling.
But I noticed the husband hasn’t had a job for almost two years now. He hardly leaves the house, except when he’s going to church with his wife or sometimes to her salon.
One afternoon, I was passing by their house when I heard raised voices. Not shouting… just the sound of a frustrated man talking.
“I feel useless,” he said. “Maybe you would have been better off marrying someone richer.”
My heart skipped.
The wife didn’t insult him. She didn’t raise her voice.
She calmly said,
“I’ve been saving from the small small hair I plait for people. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to embarrass you. Let’s use it to start something small.”
Today, I saw him outside selling drinks in front of their house.
Small beginning. But his face looked different — hopeful.
Honestly, I pray we all marry someone who will hold our hand when life becomes heavy.
Because sometimes love is not about money… it’s about partnership.
