PART 3 - B0ARDING SCHOOL LIFE
As a child in boarding school with parents who are not rich, I faced bullies and they dealt with me so bad that it made me strong, stubborn and a strong-willed person. I so got used to seniors bulling me to the extent I become so disobedient that every morning i programed my mind that everything is going to boiled down to flogging and beating so I braced myself up, prepared and anticipating the worst. It has really affected my adult life positively and negatively. I am bold, brave and always have mind of my own, on the other hand I am stubborn, and most times think the worst out of all situations. But am optimistic on life.
I had come across beautiful and supportive people with good heart in the dormitory. My Dad will drop me in school and never border to bring me food during visiting day and hunger was always my companion unless my mum come behind my dad to visit me in school with food sometimes, she sends my sister, brother or neighbor if she can’t make it. Mind you she tries her best but unfortunately, it was not always enough to last till the end of the term. Now that is where helpers in form of friends comes in, friends that share with me from the little food their parents bring to them on visiting days. people SHARON JOSEPH: she goes by ……. On Facebook, MERCY NDUBE; can’t get her on Facebook. How can I forget my school mother VICTORIA LAWRENCE; I remember crying when she finished her last exams in SS3.
Some friends are sent to you by God to help in moments of need. Though some friends are not meant to stay forever but once their part is played in your life then you part ways. But never forget them. Things I enjoyed most was the night devotions, the interhouse sport days, the playing in class before the teacher comes in, inspection Saturdays; where we decorate our houses and rooms and the best and clean house take the win. Dorms were named after color; red house, brown house, white house, orange house etc. then you have stella hostel and others.
I usually attend Pentecostal church inside the school but when I eventually discovered that catholic students do go outside the main gate to attend mass at a parish (st. John's catholic church) in the city and it was possible to sneak out, go home and come back before mass was over. Now that was a game changer for me, oh boy, I quickly joined CYS (catholic Youth Society), met their criteria, served the probation period until I was fully qualified and listed to start attending mass. All the catholic students wear white gown and walk in a straight line until we reach the parish. It was a long walk and we trekked to and fro. so sometimes I sneak out of the line to my home just to eat good and well-prepared rice and stew from my mother’s pot and get back before mass was over and no one will notice. Yes, I did it for a long time till I was tired. As a child I was ambitious and determined that anything I put my heart and mind to do, always come true.
