NARCISSISM AND HOW TO SURVIVE THEIR ABUSE IN REAL TIME

Lesson 4: The Different Types of Narcissists - Understanding Their Personalities

THEME SCRIPTURE
> "Beware of false prophets... Ye shall know them by their fruits." — Matthew 7:15–16 (KJV)

SUPPORTING SCRIPTURES
> "A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished." — Proverbs 22:3 (KJV)

> "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God..." — 1 John 4:1 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION
Not every narcissist behaves the same way. Some are loud and attention-seeking, while others appear quiet, humble, caring, or even deeply spiritual. Yet beneath these different personalities often lie the same core traits: a need for admiration, a desire for control, and a lack of genuine empathy.

Understanding the different types of narcissists helps us develop discernment, avoid deception, and establish healthy boundaries.

1. Grandiose Narcissist
This is the most recognizable type.

COMMON TRAITS
- Arrogant and boastful
- Craves admiration
- Feels superior to others
- Dominates conversations
- Believes rules don't apply to them

BIBLICAL INSIGHT
> "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." — Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)

2. Covert (Vulnerable) Narcissist
Unlike the grandiose type, covert narcissists often appear humble, shy, or misunderstood. However, they may still seek admiration and control through subtle manipulation.

COMMON TRAITS
- Plays the victim
- Easily offended
- Passive-aggressive
- Seeks sympathy
- Uses guilt to control others

BIBLICAL INSIGHT
> "A whisperer separateth chief friends." — Proverbs 16:28 (KJV)

3. MALIGNANT NARCISSIST
This is one of the most destructive forms of narcissism.

COMMON TRAITS
- Cruel and controlling
- Enjoys humiliating others
- Lacks remorse
- Can be deceptive and vindictive
- May seek revenge when challenged

BIBLICAL INSIGHT
> "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy..." — John 10:10 (KJV)

4. Communal Narcissist
This type often appears generous, caring, or deeply religious. Their acts of kindness may be driven primarily by a desire for recognition, praise, or influence rather than genuine service.

COMMON TRAITS
- Constantly advertises good deeds.
- Seeks public recognition.
- Uses generosity for admiration.
- Wants to appear morally superior.

BIBLICAL INSIGHT
> "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them..." — Matthew 6:1 (KJV)

IMPORTANT REMINDER
These categories are educational tools - not labels for diagnosing people. Human behavior is complex, and only qualified mental health professionals can diagnose Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

As followers of Christ, we are called to exercise discernment with humility, avoiding both naivety and rash judgment.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Narcissists do not all behave the same way.

- Manipulation can appear through pride, victimhood, cruelty, or a desire for public praise.

- Discern character by consistent patterns of behavior, not by appearances alone.

- Biblical wisdom helps us recognize unhealthy patterns while responding with truth and grace.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. Have I mistaken someone's outward kindness or humility for genuine character without observing consistent patterns?

2. Am I allowing wisdom and discernment - not fear or suspicion - to guide my relationships?

3. Are there any relationships where healthy boundaries may be needed?

PRAYER
Father, give me wisdom to discern character beyond outward appearances. Help me to walk in love without becoming naive, and in wisdom without becoming judgmental. Guard my heart from deception, and teach me to build relationships that reflect truth, humility, and genuine love. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
> "Discernment sees beyond appearances. Character is revealed over time through consistent actions, not carefully crafted impressions." — Samuel Ayo Babatope

Narcissism and How to Survive Their Abuse in Real Time

Lesson 3: Characteristics of Narcissistic Personalities - Recognizing the Common Traits

THEME SCRIPTURE
> "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves..." — 2 Timothy 3:1–5 (KJV)

SUPPORTING SCRIPTURES
> "Ye shall know them by their fruits..." — Matthew 7:16 (KJV)

> "A proud look... are an abomination unto the Lord." — Proverbs 6:16–19 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION
One of the greatest protections against narcissistic abuse is the ability to recognize unhealthy patterns early. While no single trait alone makes someone a narcissist, a consistent pattern of these behaviors should not be ignored.

Jesus taught us to discern people by their fruit - their consistent character and actions - not merely by their words or outward appearance (Matthew 7:16).

COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITIES

1. Excessive Need for Admiration
They constantly seek praise, recognition, and validation. Their self-worth often depends on receiving attention from others.

> "Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth..." — Proverbs 27:2 (KJV)

2. Lack of Genuine Empathy
They struggle to understand or genuinely care about the feelings and needs of others, especially when those feelings conflict with their own desires.

> "Be kindly affectioned one to another..." — Romans 12:10 (KJV)

3. Sense of Entitlement
They believe they deserve special treatment and may become angry when others do not meet their expectations.

> "Only by pride cometh contention..." — Proverbs 13:10 (KJV)

4. Manipulative Behavior
They often use guilt, fear, lies, charm, or emotional pressure to influence and control others.

> "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth..." — Ephesians 4:25 (KJV)

5. Difficulty Accepting Responsibility
Rather than admitting mistakes, they frequently blame others, make excuses, or portray themselves as the victim.

> "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper..." — Proverbs 28:13 (KJV)

6. Arrogance and Superiority
They often believe they are smarter, more important, or more deserving than everyone else.

> "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." — James 4:6 (KJV)

7. Envy and Jealousy
They may envy the success of others while believing others are jealous of them.

> "Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?" — Proverbs 27:4 (KJV)

A WORD OF CAUTION
Having one or two of these traits occasionally does not automatically mean someone is a narcissist. We all have weaknesses and areas where we need to grow.

The concern arises when these behaviors become persistent, pervasive, and harmful, especially when they damage relationships and the individual refuses accountability or change.

Only qualified mental health professionals can diagnose Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

As believers, our responsibility is to exercise wisdom, discernment, and compassion - not to label people carelessly.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Discern consistent patterns, not isolated incidents.

- Pay attention to actions more than words.

- Healthy relationships are marked by humility, empathy, honesty, and accountability.

- God calls us to discernment without becoming judgmental.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. Have I overlooked unhealthy patterns because I focused only on words instead of actions?

2. Do I consistently practice empathy and humility in my own relationships?

3. Are there relationships in my life where manipulation has become normalized?

4. How can I apply biblical wisdom while extending grace and truth?

PRAYER
Father, grant me discernment to recognize unhealthy patterns without becoming judgmental. Help me to walk in wisdom, humility, and truth. Protect me from deception, manipulation, and pride. Teach me to build relationships that reflect Your love, honesty, and righteousness. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
> "Character is revealed by consistent patterns, not occasional performances. Discern the fruit before trusting the tree."
— Samuel Ayo Babatope

Lesson 2: Healthy Confidence vs. Narcissism — Knowing the Difference

THEME SCRIPTURE
> "For I say... to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly..." — Romans 12:3 (KJV)

SUPPORTING SCRIPTURES
> "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." — Philippians 2:3 (KJV)

> "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." — Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION
Confidence is a gift from God. It enables us to fulfill our purpose with courage and conviction. However, confidence becomes dangerous when it turns into self-exaltation and a disregard for others.

One of the greatest mistakes people make is confusing healthy confidence with narcissism. Although they may appear similar on the surface, they are fundamentally different in attitude, motivation, and behavior.

WHAT IS HEALTHY CONFIDENCE?
Healthy confidence is a balanced and realistic appreciation of your God-given identity, abilities, and worth without feeling superior to others.

A confident person:
- Knows their strengths and acknowledges their weaknesses.
- Values and respects other people.
- Accepts correction and learns from mistakes.
- Celebrates the success of others.
- Leads with humility and serves willingly.
- Draws security from God rather than human approval.

HEALTHY CONFIDENCE SAYS:
> "I know who I am in God, and I don't need to prove my worth by putting others down."

WHAT IS NARCISSISM?
Narcissism is an unhealthy pattern of self-centeredness marked by an excessive need for admiration, a lack of empathy, and a desire to control or exploit others for personal gain.

A narcissistic person often:
- Seeks constant praise and validation.
- Believes they deserve special treatment.
- Finds it difficult to admit fault.
- Struggles to empathize with others.
- Uses manipulation to maintain control.
- Feels threatened by the success or opinions of others.

NARCISSISM SAYS:
> "I must always be seen as superior, even if others are hurt in the process."

*HEALTHY CONFIDENCE VS. NARCISSISM

Healthy Confidence:
- Rooted in humility
- Accepts correction
- Respects others
- Celebrates others' success
- Serves people
- Seeks God's approval
- Takes responsibility

Narcissism:
- Rooted in praise
- Rejects correction
- Exploits others
- Feels threatened by others' success
- Uses people
- Seeks constant human admiration
- Blames others

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
Jesus Christ demonstrated perfect confidence without pride. He knew His identity and authority, yet He humbled Himself and served others.

> "For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." — Mark 10:45 (KJV)

True greatness in God's Kingdom is measured by humility, love, and service - not by superiority or self-promotion.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Confidence builds; narcissism controls.

- Confidence inspires; narcissism intimidates.

- Confidence is secure; narcissism constantly seeks validation.

- God desires confidence rooted in humility, not pride.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. Is my confidence rooted in God's truth or in people's approval?

2. How do I respond when I am corrected?

3. Am I genuinely happy when others succeed?

4. Do I use my strengths to serve others or to elevate myself?

PRAYER
Father, help me to walk in the confidence that comes from knowing You without falling into pride or self-exaltation. Teach me humility, give me a heart that values others, and help me reflect the character of Christ in every relationship. Let my confidence be rooted in Your love and purpose for my life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
> "Healthy confidence is knowing your worth without diminishing the worth of others. Pride demands applause; humility reflects Christ."
— Samuel Ayo Babatope

Narcissism and How to Survive Their Abuse in Real Time

Lesson 1: Introduction to Narcissism — What Is It?

Theme Scripture

> "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." — John 8:32 (KJV)

Supporting Scriptures

> "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..." — Hosea 4:6 (KJV)

> "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." — Proverbs 4:7 (KJV)

Introduction

One of the greatest weapons against deception is knowledge. Before anyone can overcome narcissistic abuse, they must first understand what narcissism is—and what it is not.

The purpose of this series is not to label or condemn people, but to educate, promote discernment, and help people recognize unhealthy patterns, protect themselves from abuse, and pursue healing.

Knowledge should lead to wisdom, compassion, and healthy boundaries—not fear or hatred.

What Is Narcissism?

Narcissism is a pattern of thinking and behaving in which a person consistently displays an excessive need for admiration, an inflated sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy for others, and a tendency to manipulate relationships for personal benefit.

People with strong narcissistic traits often:

Constantly seek validation and attention.

Believe they deserve special treatment.

Struggle to genuinely empathize with others.

Manipulate or exploit people to maintain control.

Find it difficult to accept correction or accountability.

Not everyone who displays one or more of these traits has Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Many people may exhibit narcissistic behaviors at times without meeting the clinical criteria for the disorder. A qualified mental health professional is the appropriate person to diagnose NPD.

What Narcissism Is Not:

It is important not to confuse narcissism with:

Healthy confidence.

Strong leadership.

High self-esteem.

Personal ambition.

Self-care or setting healthy boundaries.

A confident person can value others. A narcissistic person often values others only to the extent that they serve their own needs.

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE
The Bible repeatedly warns against pride, selfish ambition, deception, and the absence of genuine love.

> "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." — Philippians 2:3 (KJV)

God calls His people to humility, love, truth, and service rather than self-exaltation.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Knowledge brings freedom.

Narcissism is more than pride—it is a persistent pattern of unhealthy attitudes and behaviors.

Avoid casually labeling people as narcissists.

Learn to recognize patterns rather than making quick judgments.

Wisdom and discernment are essential for healthy relationships.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. Have I ever mistaken confidence for narcissism?

2. Do I recognize any unhealthy relationship patterns in my own life?

3. How can I grow in wisdom and discernment while remaining compassionate toward others?

PRAYER
Father, thank You for being the God of truth. Grant me wisdom, understanding, and discernment as I learn. Protect me from deception, help me walk in humility and love, and give me the courage to recognize unhealthy patterns without becoming judgmental. Let Your truth bring healing, freedom, and peace into every area of my life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Quote of the Day
> "Truth exposes what deception hides, and wisdom empowers what knowledge reveals." — Samuel Ayo Babatope
