Rebecca had just buried her mother.
The Minnesota cemetery was almost empty.
She stood beside the fresh grave, staring at the flowers through tear-filled eyes.
Her mother had been gone for three days.
But Rebecca still couldn't believe she would never hear her voice again.
As she turned to leave, an elderly woman standing several graves away suddenly called her.
โRebecca?โ
Rebecca stopped.
She turned slowly.
โDo I know you?โ
The woman walked toward her.
Her hands trembled.
โNo. But I knew your mother.โ
Rebecca frowned.
โHow?โ
The woman looked at the grave.
โI worked at St. Mary's Hospital many years ago.โ
Rebecca's expression changed.
That was the hospital where her mother had given birth to her baby sister.
The baby who, according to her parents, had died eighteen years ago.
Rebecca swallowed.
โWere you there... when my sister was born?โ
The woman's eyes filled with tears.
โYes.โ
Rebecca's heart tightened.
โWhat do you remember?โ
The woman looked around before answering.
โYour mother was crying when they told her the baby hadn't survived.โ
Rebecca nodded slowly.
โI know.โ
โShe never got to hold her properly.โ
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
โShe always said she wished she had.โ
The old woman looked directly into Rebecca's eyes.
Then she whispered:
โRebecca... your mother was wrong.โ
Rebecca froze.
โWhat?โ
The woman took a trembling breath.
โYour sister survived.โ
For several seconds, Rebecca couldn't speak.
Then she shook her head.
โNo.โ
โI buried that grief with my mother years ago.โ
The woman stepped closer.
โYour parents were told their baby died.โ
Rebecca stared at her.
โYou're saying they lied?โ
โNo.โ
The answer came immediately.
โYour parents were told a lie.โ
Rebecca's breathing became uneven.
โThen who lied to them?โ
The woman's eyes filled with fear.
โI wasn't the one who did it.โ
โWho was?โ
The woman looked toward the cemetery entrance.
โI don't have much time.โ
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a small piece of paper.
She placed it in Rebecca's hand.
An address.
Rebecca looked at it.
โWhat is this?โ
The woman whispered:
โThe home where your sister has lived for eighteen years.โ
Rebecca's fingers began to tremble.
โMy sister is alive?โ
The woman nodded.
โBut she doesn't know you.โ
Rebecca stared at her.
โDoes she know who she really is?โ
The woman looked away.
โNo.โ
Rebecca's voice broke.
โThen who raised her?โ
The woman didn't answer.
โWho?โ
Still nothing.
Rebecca grabbed her arm.
โPlease! You came to me. You told me this. You have to tell me!โ
The woman finally looked at her.
And what she said next made Rebecca release her hand.
โYour sister was not the only baby born at that hospital that night.โ
Rebecca's face went pale.
โWhat does that mean?โ
The woman stepped backward.
โOne baby died.โ
A pause.
โOne baby went home.โ
Rebecca stared at her.
โAnd you're telling me...โ
The woman finished the sentence:
โThe wrong baby went home.โ
Rebecca couldn't breathe.
Before she could ask another question, the woman turned and hurried away.
โWait!โ
Rebecca ran after her.
But the woman disappeared beyond the cemetery gates.
Rebecca stood there, frozen.
She looked down at the address in her hand.
Then at her mother's grave.
For eighteen years, she had believed she had a sister who died.
For eighteen years, her parents had mourned that child.
And now a stranger was telling her...
they had buried the wrong story.
Rebecca slowly folded the paper.
Her eyes hardened through the tears.
โI'm going to find you.โ
She didn't know yet...
that finding her sister would uncover a secret someone had spent eighteen years killing to keep buried.
