The popular adage says, “When two elephants fight, the grass suffers.” Right now, Justice Clark is the one suffering because of unnecessary ego, emotions, and the struggle for recognition.
Barrister Marshall Abubakar was the lawyer who initially filed the bail application for Justice Clark’s release. While barrister marshall returning to Nigeria for the same case, another lawyer suddenly appeared to represent him on that same bail application already filed by Marshall Abubakar.
During the court proceedings, the judge asked Justice Clark, “Who is your leading counsel?” Instead of mentioning Marshall Abubakar, who filed the application, another lawyer was named.
At that point, Marshall Abubakar chose to withdraw his own bail application to allow the newly appointed lawyer continue the matter. So why are Nigerians blaming Marshall Abubakar for that decision?
The truth is simple: once the defendant identifies another person as his lead counsel in court, the original lawyer has every right to step aside. What exactly did people expect Marshall Abubakar to do after being replaced openly in court?
The painful part is that the real goal should have been the release of Justice Clark — not who gets the glory, praise, or social media recognition. Whether it is VDM, Sowore, Marshall Abubakar, Peter randy, mamapee or any other person involved, everybody who contributed should be appreciated.
But instead, ego, rivalry, emotions, tribal sentiments, and personal competition have turned the matter into a battle of “who must lead.” And because of that confusion, Justice Clark ended up back in custody until Monday.
This is exactly why the government does not take Nigerians seriously sometimes. We allow division, pride, and online fan wars to destroy serious efforts.
If there was truly no ego involved, the new lawyer could have simply said:
“My Lord, since the bail application was already filed by Barrister Marshall Abubakar, let us continue with it so Justice Clark can regain his freedom first.
That would have shown maturity and unity.
Dragging VDM or blaming only Marshall Abubakar without understanding what happened in court is unfair and dishonest. Nigerians need to stop emotional reasoning and start focusing on facts.
At the end of the day, the freedom of Justice Clark should matter more than who takes the glory.
