Segun Aina Assumes Office as JAMB Registrar, Vows to Uphold Board's Integrity

Professor Segun Aina has officially assumed office as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), pledging to uphold the examination body's integrity and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria's admissions process. He succeeds Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, whose two-term tenure ended after 10 years in office.

In his inaugural address at JAMB headquarters in Abuja, Aina said the Board would remain uncompromising in its fight against examination malpractice, stressing that every admission secured through dishonest means deprives a deserving candidate of a legitimate opportunity. He also pledged to deploy technology, simplify procedures, improve communication, and make JAMB more transparent, efficient, and user-friendly.

Aina expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the appointment and promised to justify the confidence placed in him through diligent service. He also assured candidates, parents, and tertiary institutions that his administration would build a more responsive and accessible JAMB that delivers professional and timely services.

The 40-year-old computer engineering professor becomes the youngest person to serve as JAMB Registrar, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the examination body as it seeks to deepen reforms and maintain the standards established over the past decade.

NESREA Probes Suspected Hazardous Chemical Spill on Kaduna–Abuja Expressway, Warns Public to Stay Clear

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has commenced an investigation into a suspected hazardous chemical spill on the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway after a road accident left an unidentified substance scattered across the highway.

According to a statement by the agency's Director of Press, Nwamaka Ejiofor, a team from NESREA's Kaduna State Office, led by the State Coordinator, Mr. Hena Dangari Emmanuel, was deployed to the scene to carry out an on-the-spot assessment.

The investigative team met with the Divisional Police Officer in Jere, ACP Sani Zubairu, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and community leaders to obtain firsthand information about the incident.

Initial investigations indicate that the spill resulted from a crash involving a heavy-duty truck transporting chemical materials, leading to the appearance of unusual white foam around the accident scene.

To establish the exact nature of the substance, NESREA collected samples of the foam, surrounding soil, and water from a nearby stream for laboratory testing, while also gathering eyewitness accounts from security agencies and residents.

The agency urged motorists, residents, and commuters to avoid contact with the affected area, warning that the substance may pose health and environmental risks until scientific analysis confirms its safety. NESREA assured the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.

CBN revokes licenses of 46 Microfinance banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revoked the operating licenses of forty-six (46) Microfinance Banks with effect from July 1, 2026.

A statement released by the apex bank today July 1, says the revocation was approved by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, following the banks’ failure to meet the regulatory requirements for continued operation as licensed financial institutions.

According to the revocation order, the action became necessary due to Insufficient assets to meet liabilities, Closure of operations without the CBN approval, Inactivity and cessation of financial intermediation, Failure to commence operations within 12 months of licence approval, and Failure to maintain minimum capital funds unimpaired by losses.

CBN said the revocation of the licenses is part of the Bank’s ongoing efforts to safeguard the stability of the financial sector, protect depositors, and ensure that licensed institutions comply with current laws and regulatory requirements.

NCAA grounds private jet after landing on express road near Asaba, suspends operator’s permit

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says no casualties were recorded after a privately operated aircraft landed on a roadway in the Ogwashi-Uku area near Asaba, Delta state.

In a statement on Wednesday, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, said preliminary reports indicated that the aircraft conducted a missed approach while attempting to land at Asaba airport at about 7:43am.

“Reports received from personnel at the scene indicate that all occupants safely exited the aircraft and were transported to Asaba by road,” Achimugu said.

Breaking: Tinubu appoints 39-year-old professor new JAMB registrar

President Bola Tinubu has appointed 39-year-old Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Aina, who will be 40 in July, succeeds Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose two-term tenure expires on July 31, 2026.

In a statement released, presidential media aide, Bayo Onanuga, described Aina as a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform.

“He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing, both from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. He has also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

A Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aina began his career with JAMB during his National Youth Service, gaining foundational experience in national admissions and data-driven institutional processes. These insights have shaped his ongoing contributions to examination reform and systems optimisation.

Professor Aina is a member of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).”

Onanuga said Tinubu expects Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the Board and to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor.
