Welcome everyone,
Today let's talk about Diabetes mellitus
Diabetes is not one condition.
It shows up differently, affects people differently, and tells different stories.
Let’s me break it down
TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS
Also called insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes.
It usually affects children and young people.
In Type 1 diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed or absent, so the body cannot produce insulin at all
There is food (glucose), but no key (insulin) to open the door for energy.
Think of it like this🙂↕️:
There is food (glucose), but no key (insulin) to open the door for energy.
People with Type 1 diabetes must use insulin to survive.
It is not caused by eating sugar and not caused by lifestyle.
TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
This is the most common type.
Also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes (especially in the early stages).
Here, insulin is present, but the body cannot use it properly — a condition called insulin resistance.
It is commonly associated with:
• Poor diet
• Physical inactivity
• Overweight/obesity
• Family history
• Increasing age
Many people don’t notice it early. They say:
“I’m just tired.”
“I drink water a lot.”
“I urinate frequently.”
Meanwhile diabetes is quietly progressing
GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS (GDM)
This is pregnancy-induced diabetes.
It occurs during pregnancy, even in women who have never had diabetes before.
Insulin is present, but pregnancy hormones interfere with its action, leading to high blood sugar.
That’s why antenatal care and routine blood sugar testing are very important — for both mother and baby .
COMMON SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR
• Polyuria – frequent urination
• Polydipsia – excessive thirst
• Polyphagia – excessive hunger
• Unexplained weight loss
• Fatigue
• Blurred vision
• Slow wound healing
RISK FACTORS
• Family history of diabetes
