A study by the University of Cambridge has revealed that members of Boko Haram’s two main factions, ISWAP and JAS, used artificial intelligence chatbots to obtain technical and military information.

The research was based on 57 interviews with 27 former Boko Haram members conducted in northeastern Nigeria during 2025 and 2026. The former fighters described using several major AI systems, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek, for activities ranging from attack planning and weapons troubleshooting to operational and logistical questions.

According to the study, some former members also reported using AI in connection with explosives and battlefield operations. Researchers said the findings represent an important concern because AI can provide interactive answers tailored to a user's specific situation rather than simply returning information from a search engine.

However, the researchers also acknowledged limitations: much of the evidence comes from interviews with former members, and some claims could not be independently verified through platform records or other technical evidence.

The findings are raising fresh questions about how AI companies can prevent their technology from being exploited by terrorist organisations while keeping legitimate AI tools available to ordinary users.

A survivor has recounted the terrifying circumstances surrounding the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners at a mining site in Niger State.

According to the survivor, an unknown substance was allegedly sprayed inside the cell where some of the miners were being held, after which people began collapsing.

«“They sprayed something in the cell, and people started falling down,” the survivor reportedly said.»

The incident has raised serious questions about what happened at the facility and what may have caused the deaths. Authorities are expected to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including the substance allegedly used and the events leading to the deaths.

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that a planned demonstration by transporters in Lagos could provide President Bola Tinubu with an opportunity to temporarily bring back fuel subsidy.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, September 18, Atiku alleged that any temporary return of the subsidy could later be reversed after the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku’s comments come amid renewed concerns over rising petrol prices and their impact on transportation, food prices and the wider cost of living. He has also called on the Federal Government to take immediate steps to reduce petrol prices.

It is important to note that the statement about a planned Lagos protest and the alleged intention behind any possible subsidy reversal are Atiku’s claims; they do not establish that the Federal Government has decided to restore the subsidy.
