What is an Ulcer?

An ulcer is an open sore or break in the skin or the lining of an internal organ. It occurs when tissue is damaged and fails to heal properly, often due to infection, poor blood flow, or irritation. Ulcers can develop in many parts of the body, most commonly in the stomach and intestines (peptic ulcers), in the mouth (oral ulcers), or on the skin (pressure sores or diabetic foot ulcers).

Types of Ulcers

1. Peptic ulcer – forms in the stomach or upper small intestine, usually caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or long-term use of NSAIDs.

2. Mouth (oral) ulcer – painful sores inside the mouth, often due to stress, trauma, or vitamin deficiencies.

3. Skin ulcers – open sores on the skin, often related to pressure (bedsores), poor circulation, or diabetes.
