URGENT APPEAL FOR IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY INTERVENTION OVER SEVERE CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN SAKWA COMMUNITIES, HAWUL LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Your Excellencies, Honourable Chairman, Distinguished Officials, Humanitarian Organizations and Concerned Health Agencies,

We, the Sakwa Community Youth Development Association, respectfully write to urgently appeal to the Borno State Government, Hawul Local Government Council, relevant health authorities, humanitarian organizations and other well-meaning partners to immediately intervene in the severe cholera outbreak currently affecting several communities in Hawul Local Government Area.

We are making this appeal because the situation has become extremely alarming and life, threatening. The outbreak is spreading rapidly through our communities and is already claiming lives. More than three people have reportedly lost their lives, and we pray that Almighty Allah forgives their shortcomings and grants their families the strength to bear this painful loss.

At present, more than 50 of our brothers, sisters and children are reportedly in critical condition, fighting for their lives. Many are receiving treatment in a makeshift treatment setup at Sakwa Clinic, while others are seeking medical attention in various hospitals. The available medical facilities and resources are seriously inadequate to cope with the growing number of patients.

The affected communities include:

1. Sakwa Town
2. Sakwa Bura
3. Ndurakwu
4. Ngwa
5. Ngardu
6. Malang
7. Bargi Sakwa

This is an emergency that requires immediate and coordinated intervention. We urgently appeal for the deployment of medical personnel, adequate drugs and medical supplies, oral rehydration solutions, clean and safe drinking water, water purification materials, temporary treatment facilities, hygiene and sanitation supplies, public health education, and other essential cholera-response resources.

We equally appeal to the government and humanitarian organizations to urgently assess the situation on the ground and establish an effective emergency response mechanism to prevent further loss of lives and contain the spread of the disease to neighbouring communities.

Our people are suffering, our children are vulnerable, and families are living in fear. We cannot afford to wait until the number of casualties rises further before decisive action is taken. Every hour matters, and every life saved will be a blessing to our communities.

We therefore humbly call upon the Borno State Government, Hawul Local Government Council, Ministry of Health, relevant health agencies, humanitarian organizations, NGOs and other development partners to come to our aid and intervene with immediate effect.

We believe that with swift government action, adequate medical support, clean water, sanitation measures and coordinated humanitarian assistance, this outbreak can be brought under control and further loss of lives prevented.

We sincerely appreciate the efforts of everyone currently providing assistance to affected persons despite the limited resources available. We also pray for the quick recovery of everyone currently battling this disease.

We are crying out for help. Our communities need urgent intervention. Our people need help now.

May Almighty Allah protect our communities, grant healing to the sick, comfort the families who have lost loved ones, and bless everyone who responds to this urgent call for assistance.

His Excellency Hon. Hon. Musa Ali Sakwa described June 12 as a historic day that symbolizes the sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians in their struggle for democratic governance. He noted that the day serves as a reminder of the nation’s unwavering commitment to freedom, justice, equality, and the rule of law.

He emphasized that democracy remains the foundation of national development and unity, providing citizens with the opportunity to participate actively in shaping the future of their communities and the nation at large. According to him, democratic governance thrives when leaders are accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.

As a true democrat and grassroots-oriented leader, Hon. Musa Ali Sakwa reaffirmed his belief that democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. He stressed that the voices, aspirations, and welfare of citizens must always remain at the center of governance.

He commended the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, and other leaders who continue to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance across Nigeria and Borno State.

Bello El-Rufai, the son of former Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, served as a Special Legislative Aide (SLA) under Governor Uba Sani for about four years. Today, a serious disagreement exists between his father and Governor Uba Sani, to the extent that reconciliation has proven difficult.

Despite the conflict, Bello has demonstrated remarkable maturity and restraint.
