December is all that we give,
And whatever we receive,
It is those who surround us,
And those who have taken leave.

December is celebrating light,
Where only darkness dwells,
It is the ripping of wrapping paper,
And tempting culinary smells.

December is letting go,
Of all the past year's fails,
And starting anew in January,
As time again chases its tail.

Musa Muhammad El-Said / The Trial of a Truck Boy (2025)

This book tells a story of a young Nigerian boy travelling through Nigeria as he enters manhood and grapples with wide-ranging social issues. He experiences joy, pain, violence, hardship, tribal and ethnic tensions along the way.

'I witnessed the victimisation of the issue of “indigene-ship” in a place I had influential people that could help me secure a job. I suffered marginalisation in the place I was brought up. I was discriminated against by my blood relations who refused to help me further my education and secure good jobs for me.'

And as I closed the book, I realised how much I owe to this pleasant habit of reading in bed.
Now I have only to open the window, put out the light, turn over, and completely self-satisfied, go to sleep.

A library in the middle of a community is a cross between an emergency exit, a life-raft and a festival. They are cathedrals of the mind; hospitals of the soul; theme parks of the imagination.

It also prognoses the trajectory of civil rule from 1999 till 2015, but provides a fair insight that gives a fuller grasp of the future of Nigeria’s democracy.'

Reading is fundamentally the most important thing that a writer can do.
To read as widely as possible.
Read good people.
Read people who you admire and who challenge you.
