When the Managing Director of NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML), Abdulkadir Ahmed, raised the alarm over the growing menace of plastics and debris on Nigeria’s waterways in May 2026, his warning appeared to be another appeal for greater environmental responsibility.

Months later, as flooding and waterway pollution continue to expose the vulnerability of communities and waterways, Ahmed’s warning has assumed a new significance.

The Federal Government has been urged to place coastal communities at the centre of Nigeria’s blue economy agenda, with stakeholders warning that the country may not fully unlock the sector’s potential without harnessing the skills, knowledge and economic activities of people living along its waterways and coastline.

The call will form a major focus of the 4th Ehingbeti Blue Economy Hub, scheduled for September 17, 2026, at the Lagos Oriental Hotel.

Themed “Securing Nigeria’s Blue Economy: Need to Strengthen Regulatory and Maritime Framework for Sustainable Coastal Development,” the forum is expected to examine the legal, regulatory and security challenges affecting coastal development and investment in Nigeria.

The newly enacted Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) Act is set to usher in a new era of stronger regulation, transparency and predictability in Nigeria’s port economy, with arbitrary charges by service providers expected to come under tighter control.

Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NPERA, Dr. Pius Akutah, MON, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on the implications of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the NPERA Act, 2026.

Akutah described the legislation as a major milestone in the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector, saying it had fundamentally altered the architecture of port economic regulation by giving the agency clearer statutory powers and stronger enforcement authority.

Global ride-hailing company Uber has exited the Nigerian market after 12 years of operations, ending its services in the country on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following a review of its business.

The San Francisco-based company announced the decision in messages to drivers and customers, saying it had taken the “tough decision” to wind down its Nigerian operations effective September 2.

“For years, your commitment to your riders has kept this city moving safely and affordably,” Uber told its driver-partners, thanking them for their contributions to the company’s journey in Nigeria.

From the effective date, drivers will no longer receive rider trip requests through the Uber app, bringing to an end the company’s operations in a market it entered in 2014 with its launch in Lagos before expanding to other Nigerian cities.

Uber did not disclose specific reasons for its withdrawal, saying only that the decision followed a thorough review of its business.

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has felicitated former Military Administrator and former Senator representing Kogi Central, Senator Tunde Ogbeha, on his 79th birthday, describing him as a distinguished elder statesman whose years of service remain valuable to Kogi State and Nigeria.

In a congratulatory message to the former Military Administrator, Governor Ododo acknowledged Ogbeha’s contributions to public service and the development of the state and the country, describing his wealth of experience and wisdom as enduring assets.

The governor said Ogbeha’s years of service had established a legacy worthy of recognition, noting that his contributions to public life would continue to serve as a reference point for excellence and responsible leadership.

“At 79, you have continued to exhibit a high level of wisdom that remains valuable to our state and our country,” Ododo said.

The University of Ibadan (UI) has honoured a prominent public relations practitioner and Chief Executive Officer of Midas Communications Limited, Mr Kehinde Olaosebikan, for his contributions to the establishment and development of the university’s Sports Academy, saying the initiative aligns with the sports and youth development thrust of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.



Olaosebikan was honoured on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with the “Iconic Friend of the University of Ibadan Sports Academy” award during a presentation at the headquarters of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Kehinde Olaosebikan (PBAT-KO) Grassroots Movement in Olomi, Oluyole Local Government Area of Ibadan.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) have moved to deepen collaboration in strategic communication, digital media and professional development, with both organisations stressing the growing importance of effective communication in an increasingly technology-driven environment.



The commitment was made last Monday, August 31, 2026, when the executive members of ACSPN visited the NCS National Headquarters in Abuja to explore areas of institutional partnership and knowledge exchange.

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has warned criminal elements operating in the state that they will regret attempting to establish kidnapping networks in the state, following the successful rescue of 21 victims abducted along a major road axis in Dekina Local Government Area.

The governor, while commending the security agencies involved in the operation, said his administration would not allow criminals to threaten the lives and property of residents or undermine the relative peace being enjoyed across the state.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through Operation Whirlwind Zone B, has intensified its crackdown on the illicit movement of petroleum products, with the public auction of 9,125 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) seized along the Kebbi-Sokoto axis.

The auction, conducted on Tuesday at the Kebbi Area Command of the NCS, involved 365 jerrycans of PMS with an estimated Duty Paid Value of ₦9.125 million.

The products were intercepted by operatives of Operation Whirlwind at strategic locations, including Kamba, Bagudo, Gwadabawa and Illela, following intelligence-led enforcement operations.

Representing the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Deputy Comptroller Abubakar Lucky Aliyu, the Team Commander, Zone B, said the seizures demonstrated the determination of the operation to prevent the diversion, smuggling and illegal movement of petroleum products across the country.
