When I learned that I was having a baby girl, I was excited at first, but then my excitement gradually turned into FEAR. The question is why?

You see, growing up, the mother-daughter relationship I had experienced wasn’t great and so I feared that somehow, the cycle would continue. “God, are you sure about this? Will I be a good mum to her? Are you sure she wouldn’t be better off with another mum?” These and more were the questions I found myself asking.

I realized in my life’s journey that the mother-daughter rift wasn’t unique to me – I found out that other ladies in my life at the time had a not-so-cool relationship with their mothers; some even had worse stories to tell. This got me wondering why. Was this God’s design? Was the mother-daughter rift the will of God? What was the reason for this relationship problem?

So, about my reaction toward the “baby girl” news, my dear husband asked me to speak to God about it, be open about my fears and trust Him to help me. Understanding God’s perspective of motherhood was a step in the right direction as it helped me and still helps me nurture a healthy relationship with my daughter and my sons as well. With God, you never stop learning new things.
