Please Manaria, hide my identity and notify me when you post.

I am a 38-year-old widower from Delta State.
I have a 10-year-old son, the only child my late wife and I had together.
Five years ago, my life changed forever.
One Saturday morning, my wife told me she wanted to go to the market to buy foodstuff for the house.

Before leaving, she smiled and asked me if there was anything special I wanted her to buy.
I told her nothing but to bring her beautiful self back. She laughed, carried her handbag and left. That was the last conversation I ever had with her.

A few hours later, I received a phone call.
Some people told me my wife had been knocked down by a hit-and-run driver while trying to cross the road. Before I could get to the hospital...She was already gone. The doctors said she was brought in dead.

I can't describe the pain of that day.
We buried her, and suddenly I became both father and mother to a little boy who kept asking me one question.
"Daddy, when is mummy coming back?"
Those words broke me every single time.
For almost three years after her death, my son stayed with my mother because I wasn't emotionally stable enough to take care of him properly.

When I finally gathered myself together, I brought him back home, and since then, we have been living together. My parents have been encouraging me to remarry. They keep telling me that my son needs a mother figure.
To be honest, I also wanted companionship again.

That was how I met a lady. Before our relationship became serious, I told her
everything.
I told her I was a widower.
I told her about my late wife.
I told her about my son.
She told me she had no problem with any of it.
As time went on, she became part of our lives.
She visited my house regularly.

At first, she related well with my son.She would ask him about school. She would buy him biscuits and chocolates whenever she visited.
Everything looked normal.
But gradually, I started noticing little changes.
Whenever my son came to sit with us, she would suddenly become uncomfortable.
If we planned to go out together, she would sometimes suggest that my son should stay behind.I tried convincing myself that I was only overthinking.

Eventually, I proposed to her.She accepted. She became my fiancée.We fixed our wedding date.
Then one evening, I decided to have an honest conversation with her.
I asked if everything was truly okay because I had noticed she wasn't as warm towards my son as she used to be.She became quiet for a while. Then she finally spoke.
She said,
"There is something I have been meaning to tell you."I told her to go ahead.

She said,"Once we get married, I don't think your son should continue living with us."
At first, I thought I misunderstood her.I asked her to repeat herself. She said,"Your mother has already raised him before. Let him continue staying with her. I don't want another woman's child becoming a distraction in my marriage. I want us to start our own family without baggage."

I couldn't believe my ears.I looked at her for a few seconds. Then I asked,"So... you're asking me to choose between my own son and you?"
She replied,"I'm not asking you to choose. I'm only saying your mother already loves him. He'll be fine with her."

At that moment...Something inside me changed.I looked at her and calmly said,
"Please... give me my ring."
She looked confused.
She asked,
"What do you mean?"
I said,
"The engagement ring. Please remove it and give it back to me."
She thought I was joking.I repeated myself.
This time, she slowly removed the ring from her finger and handed it to me.I collected it.
Then I looked at her and said,"There will be no wedding."She was shocked.

I continued,"I told you about my son before we started this relationship. You accepted him then. Today, you're calling my own child baggage and asking me to send him away. If you can say this before marriage, I don't want to imagine what his life would become after we have children together."

I told her to pick her things in my house and make sure she doesn't forget any,I opened the door for her and asked her to leave my house. She quietly picked up her handbag, box and left. That was the end of our relationship.Since then, my mother has been pleading with me.Some of my friends have also said I acted too fast.

They believe I should have married her first and then handled the issue later.
But I keep asking myself one question.
If a woman could ask me to send my ten-year-old son away before we were even married, what guarantee do I have that she would genuinely love him after marriage?
To me, my son is not baggage.

He is the last gift my late wife left behind.
I cannot abandon him to make another woman comfortable.

Please, I need honest advice. Did I overreact by ending the engagement immediately, or did I make the right decision before bringing someone like that into my son's life?
