"My 2014 Advocacy Inspired Naming of Godswill Akpabio Int'l Stadium" -Itoro Etuk

A civil engineer and youth advocate, Engr. Itoro Elijah Etuk, has attested that his advocacy efforts in 2014 laid the foundation for naming the Akwa Ibom International Stadium after former Governor Godswill Akpabio.

Speaking to journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, Etuk recounted how he led a personal campaign at the twilight of Senator Akpabio’s administration, calling on the state government to immortalize the then-outgoing governor by naming the then newly built State stadium in his honour.

“My contributions to Akwa Ibom’s growth have always stemmed from a place of patriotism and belief in purposeful leadership.

“What many people are unaware of is that I was the first to publicly advocate for the stadium to be named after Governor Akpabio, a man who transformed the state into a beacon of national progress.” Etuk said.

Etuk explained that his campaign was not limited to private suggestions but took the form of a deliberate media advocacy strategy.

He sponsored a page opinion article published in The Pioneer newspaper on September 20, 2014, and also funded a radio commentary on the Akwa Ibom State Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC) in the days leading up to the stadium’s official commissioning.

The commissioning ceremony, held in late 2014, was attended by three African Presidents and marked a defining moment in the state’s infrastructural journey.

Since then, the stadium, now known as the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium has grown into a prominent national landmark, hosting major sporting events, political functions, and recently, the official reception of Governor Umo Eno into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Etuk noted that while many have celebrated the facility and its name, no one had publicly claimed credit for initiating the naming idea until now.

“I was a young man driven by conviction, I didn’t ask for recognition then, and I’m not asking for it now. I simply believed in celebrating visionaries while they are alive.” he said.

He described the naming of the stadium after Akpabio as “a fitting tribute” to a leader who envisioned and built what has become a symbol of Akwa Ibom’s modern identity.

Etuk also commended Governor Umo Eno for what he called “pragmatic and unifying leadership,” praising the governor for uniting with Senate President Akpabio to foster stronger federal government ties and attract new opportunities for the state.
