This is how we do it in Mbaise! For generations now! I watched my grandmas on both my mother's side and my father's side do a very important ritual after delivery, cooking mmiri ogwu, packed with the best stockfish, dry fish, varieties of crayfish and dried prawns, fluffy fufu and love.. These were neatly arranged in our beloved raffia basket and taken to the hospital.

The aroma alone made the new mom feel so much better!
She would eat and eat and drink the mmiiri ogwu made with aju mbaise, uda, uziza etc to her satisficatiin..
This was only the beginning of the omugwo journey.

When she returns home, as early as 5am,
We will be woken up by sounds of mortar and pestle hugging each other in rhythmic sounds.

The new mom musttake her hot mmiiri ogwu before the sun rises!

With lots of care, surrounded by family and loved ones, recovery was easy!

When I began having babies, my mom made this ritual a very huge part of my omugwo, thee hot pepper soup was brought to thee hospital for me.

This is my 4th baby and anytime I give birth, nothing enters my mouth first unless it's aju mbaise!
