Chairman Sues Governor Bago Over Attempted Early Termination of LG Tenure

The Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area, Aminu Ladan, has taken legal action against Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, over an alleged move to prematurely end the tenure of elected local government officials. Ladan claims the Governor's decision to conduct fresh elections just three years into their constitutionally guaranteed four-year term is unlawful and a violation of the 1999 Constitution. The matter is now before the court as the chairman seeks to protect the mandate given by the people.

Lawmakers Advancing Proposal to Prohibit Public Employees From Using Private Schools and Hospitals.

The House of Representatives has proposed a new bill aimed at preventing public officials and civil servants from using private schools and healthcare services. This move is intended to restore faith in Nigeria’s public institutions.

The legislative proposal, called "A Bill for an Act to Prohibit Public and Civil Servants from Using Private Schools and Health Care Services and for Related Matters (HB 2487)," was presented on Tuesday.

Amobi Godwin Ogah, during a press conference at the National Assembly, explained that the new legislative proposal aims to mandate that government officials and their families utilize public schools and hospitals.

Ogah stated that the proposed legislation represents a pivotal moment in Nigeria's endeavor to tackle the deterioration of public institutions.

He said, “This bill intends to prohibit all public and civil servants, including their immediate family members, from patronising private schools and healthcare services in order to avoid conflict of interest, maintain public trust and ensure high uncompromised standards and integrity of these public institutions.

“If we have started the removal of petroleum subsidy, we must also enforce this bill to prohibit the patronising of private schools and healthcare services by public and civil servants.”

Troops Foil Terrorist Attack in Niger, Neutralize Dozens

Troops of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday neutralised scores of bandits who attempted to a coordinated attack on Warari, a community in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State.
The troops successfully repelled the coordinated terrorist attack after over four hours confrontation, sources in the area said.

Sources disclosed that a significant number of the attackers were killed in the intense gun battle.
Some of the terrorists, in a desperate attempt to flee on motorcycles, ran into each other and were gunned down by the troops.
According to residents, the assailants were the same group responsible for recent attacks in the area and were attempting a repeat of their violent campaign. However, their efforts were thwarted by the swift and forceful response of the military.
Although the exact number of casualties could not be independently verified, multiple sources suggested that the death toll among the bandits is substantial.
Official figures are expected to be released by the Nigerian Army and relevant government authorities in due course.
Local residents trooped out after the operation lining up the streets hailing the gallant troops as they return to their base.
They praised the gallantry and resilience of the soldiers involved, describing their actions as brave and commendable. The residents urged the military to maintain the momentum in safeguarding communities across the region.

Kamoru Ogunlana, the clerk of the national assembly, shared the news through a statement released on Monday.

He said, “I am directed by the president of the senate and the speaker of the house of representatives to inform all members of the national assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July, 2025.”
