**Truth vs. Image: Navigating the Celestial Church of Christ's Response to Murder Allegations**

By: Evang O. M. Ogunmiloro (Ph.D.)

**Introduction**

A tragic incident has placed the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) at the center of public scrutiny. The case involves the murder of a young boy (graduate of LASU), a member of the church, whose body was exhumed near the church premises close to Lagos State University. Initial allegations accused the church’s shepherd and his son, but further investigations have revealed that some students, also alleged members of the church, were involved in the crime. Shockingly, financial transactions linking the deceased, his friends, the shepherd, and even his parents have surfaced, fueling intense media speculations.

This situation presents serious ethical, theological, and institutional challenges: Should the church protect its image at the expense of truth?

How do we balance defending CCC’s reputation while ensuring that justice is served?

This article critically examines these concerns through Christian apologetics, psychology, philosophy, and sociology.

1. **Should the Church Protect Its Image at the Expense of Truth?**

"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." – Proverbs 14:34

"To conceal wrongdoing is to invite judgment, but to expose truth is to invite justice."

A fundamental Christian principle is that truth must always prevail. The temptation to suppress uncomfortable realities to safeguard the church’s reputation is both morally and biblically wrong. Jesus Christ rebuked religious leaders who appeared righteous outwardly but concealed corruption (Matthew 23:27-28).

The Celestial Church must not repeat the mistake of prioritizing institutional image over integrity.

From a psychological perspective, attempting to suppress information only deepens public mistrust.

Studies in crisis management show that organizations that embrace transparency regain credibility faster than those that engage in cover-ups.

The CCC must therefore allow due process to take its course and be an advocate for truth.

Sociologically, a church that fails to condemn wrongdoing among its members loses moral authority. The CCC leadership must publicly denounce any proven criminal involvement and demonstrate its commitment to justice.

The best way to protect the CCC’s image is not by covering the truth, but by ensuring that justice is served.

2. **Investigation Outcomes That May Shock the Public**

Many individuals have already formed strong opinions on this case, assuming the guilt or innocence of specific parties.

However, the investigation may reveal unexpected and unsettling truths. Some possible shocking outcomes include:

(1) **The Financial Transactions Could Reveal a Larger Criminal Syndicate**

"Follow the money, and you shall find the root of the crime." – Anonymous

What if the shepherd, the parents, and even the deceased were unknowingly entangled in a broader network of crime?

The investigation could expose a dangerous underground operation involving fraud, extortion, or ritual activities, extending beyond the church.

(2) **The Shepherd and His Son Might Be Victims of a Framing Scheme**

"The innocent often suffer the weight of the guilty’s deception."

If financial links were manipulated or coerced, the church leaders might be innocent scapegoats, targeted to divert attention from the real perpetrators.

This could expose a deeper conspiracy within the community or even among students.

(3) **The Deceased’s Friends Might Have Lured Him into a Deadly Scheme**

"Bad company corrupts good morals." – 1 Corinthians 15:33

If some students played a significant role in the boy’s murder, what if he was deceived into a dangerous game, cult initiation, or a financial scam that spiraled out of control?

Such a revelation would shift blame away from the church and highlight a crisis of youth involvement in criminal activities.

(4) **The Deceased’s Parents Might Be More Involved Than Expected**

"Sometimes, the ones closest to us have the darkest secrets." – Unknown

If monetary transactions link the parents to suspicious dealings, what if they had knowledge of, or were indirectly complicit in, the events leading to their son’s death?

This would dramatically alter public perception of the case.

(5) **The Church Might Possibly Have Been Used as a Mere Dumping Ground**

"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes." – Mark Twain

What if CCC parish had no direct involvement in the crime, but criminals exploited its location to create a false narrative?

The investigation might prove that the church was simply an unfortunate backdrop to a separate, external conflict.

Each of these scenarios shows the importance of waiting for conclusive evidence rather than jumping to conclusions based on speculation.

3. **Can Any Single Factional Leader Solve This Crisis?**

"Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand." – Matthew 12:25

"One leader alone cannot turn the tide of a storm; unity must prevail." – African Proverb

The Celestial Church of Christ is already battling deep factionalism. The idea that one leader alone can restore credibility while others remain passive or compromised is unrealistic. Moral responsibility cannot be selective.

Philosophically, leadership is about collective responsibility. A divided church where some factions ignore moral discipline while others enforce it will never achieve true justice. The CCC must present a united front against corruption, criminality, and moral decay.

Sociologically, church factions that fail to align on moral values weaken the institution’s credibility. If one faction defends justice while others silently tolerate wrongdoings, CCC will remain in crisis. True reform must come from a collective agreement among all leaders to uphold righteousness.

**Conclusion**: The Church Must Be a Beacon of Truth

The Celestial Church of Christ now faces a defining moment. Will it choose integrity, or will it fall into the trap of secrecy and compromise? The answer will determine its moral authority for generations to come.

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." – John 8:32

"Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are." – Benjamin Franklin

CCC must show that it stands for truth, justice, and righteousness. Covering up the facts will not protect the church, it will only deepen mistrust and lead to further crises. Instead, CCC should embrace transparency, support a full investigation, and take corrective actions where necessary.

To those who have rushed to judgment, let this serve as a reminder: Truth is not a matter of public opinion, but of verifiable fact.

MOREMI AJASORO

Abiodun Duro-Ladipo (born 1941) is a Nigerian actress and vocalist of noble Yoruba lineage. In 1963, she joined the theatre group of Duro Ladipo, whom she wed the following year. Portraying key roles in her husband's iconic plays, she excelled as Oya in Oba Koso and as the lead in Moremi. During the 1960s and early 1970s, she performed across Europe at various global festivals. Since her husband's passing in 1978, Abiodun has appeared in Nigerian television series and films celebrating African heritage, once again reprising her role as Moremi in the 2009 film of the same title.

Biography
Abiodun was born into a royal household in Epe-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Nigeria, making her an Omoba of the Yoruba people. Initially aspiring to be a nurse, she joined the Mbari Mbayo Theatre Group led by Duro Ladipo after completing secondary school in 1963. She soon became the leader of the women's section. She married Ladipo in 1964 and gained prominence as an actress, taking leading roles in all the company's productions.

During the 1960s and 1970s, she performed as both an actress and singer in numerous theatre and music festivals, such as Berlin's Festspiele (1964), London's Commonwealth Arts Festival (1965), the Festival mondial du théâtre de Nancy (1973), and the Yoruba Festival in Zürich (1973). She also appeared in Belgrade, Iran’s Shiraz Arts Festival, and Rome’s Arts Festival.

After her husband's death in 1978, Abiodun took charge of the theatre company, a rare achievement for women at the time. Although she favored stage performances, she increasingly shifted to television, starring in the musical series Oya Sings (1979) and the drama series B'Inaku (1981). Other television appearances included Oyinbo Ajele (1986), Esentaye (1997), and Ayelaagbe (1998), all supporting traditional culture amidst the challenges of colonialism. Her film roles are largely drawn from her earlier stage performances, such as Erelu in Aropin n'Teniyan, Iya Ewe in Ija Orugun, and her most notable role as Moremi. In 2017, she directed a new version of Moremi, titled Moremi Ajasoro.

Dedicated to preserving significant works, Abiodun has been collecting newspaper clippings about Yoruba traveling theatre, especially the Duro Ladipo Theatre, since 1964. Her collection also includes a wide array of costumes and memorabilia.

Although she has previously critiqued Nigeria's leaders for breaking their promises, in March 2018, when Duro Ladipo's play Ajagun Nla was staged at the National Theatre in Lagos, Abiodun expressed gratitude to the government for their support. She urged Nigerian women to remain patient as wives and mothers, emphasizing that "our rich culture must be preserved and promoted."

Meet Lisabi, a Legendary Warrior

Lisabi was a famous leader from Egba Alake, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, born around 1750. He belonged to the Egba tribe, a part of the Yoruba people. His father, Odunsi, was a respected warrior.

Lisabi was trained by his father and showed great courage in battles against neighboring tribes. He became prominent in the 1770s-1780s and led the Egba people to victory against the Dahomey Empire.

Through his leadership, Lisabi united the warring Egba groups, making Abeokuta their capital city. He protected Egba land from outsiders, encouraged trade and farming, and created a sense of identity among the Egba people.

Lisabi is remembered as the founder of modern Abeokuta. His life and achievements are recorded in Nigerian and Yoruba history books and passed down through oral traditions.

Today, Lisabi is celebrated in Yoruba stories and cultural festivals. A monument, the Lisabi Memorial, honors him in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and the Lisabi Festival is held annually in his honor.
