1 Woman. 30 surgeries. No anesthesia. No consent.
This is the story of Anarcha, an enslaved Black woman whose body was used as a medical experiment in the 19th century. Her pain, her suffering, and her resilience paved the way for modern gynecologyโyet her name has been erased from history.
Anarcha was a slave in Alabama. And that wordโsllaveโis a terrible, violent thing. It reduces a human being to property, to something that can be bartered, bruised, or broken.
Anarcha was owned. And ownership meant that her pain was not hers. It belonged to someone else. To the man who saw in her suffering an opportunity.
His name was Dr. J. Marion Sims. They call him the father of modern gynecology. How poetic. The man who ripped open Black womenโs bodies so that white women could birth their babies with less peril. A father indeed.๐๐พ
we have created a video that uncovers the brutal history behind Dr. J. Marion Sims, the so-called 'father of modern gynecology,' and the unimaginable sacrifices Anarcha endured. Her story is one of courage, pain, and a legacy that demands to be remembered.
