Tinubu and His Late Mother Supported IBB’s Annulment of June 12 —Sule Lamido Alleges

A former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has stirred political waters with a bold claim that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was among those who supported the annulment of the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Saturday, Lamido alleged that Tinubu, widely regarded today as one of the champions of Nigeria’s democracy, had ties with the military regime that nullified the election won by Chief MKO Abiola.

According to Lamido, Tinubu's late mother, Hajia Abibatu Mogaji, was also involved in the political orchestration, allegedly mobilizing market women from Lagos to show solidarity with then Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) in Abuja.

“Tinubu was actively hand-in-glove with Babangida,” Lamido said. “His own mother Hajia Mogaji was organising Lagos market women to come to Abuja to pledge support for Babangida.”

Lamido also took aim at the legacy of NADECO (National Democratic Coalition), the pro-democracy group widely celebrated for its resistance to military rule. Contrary to public belief, Lamido claimed the coalition wasn’t formed in defense of the June 12 mandate but was instead aimed at fighting against General Sani Abacha's dictatorship.

“Tinubu became relevant and noticeable after Abacha took over the government; before then, he was just a senator and a party secretary,” Lamido said. “NADECO was a postulation formation to fight Abacha, not for June 12.”

The June 12, 1993 election, presumed to be the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, was won by business mogul Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, but the results were annulled by General Babangida, triggering national outrage and years of political turmoil.

Lagos Reporters will continue to monitor reactions to this developing story.

59 die in Borno, Kano, Kebbi, Pleteau attacks

NO fewer than 59 people were killed in four separate attacks in Borno, Kano, Kebbi and Plateau states on Friday and Saturday.

While 30 people were killed in Kebbi State, 12 persons, who were identified as wedding guests were murdered in Plateau State.

In Borno State, 12 persons died in a su***de bombing carried out in a fish market by a woman, while in Kano State, a military mortar bomb went off along the Eastern Bypass in Kano, the State capital, on Saturday, killing five persons in the process.

12 die in Borno su***de bombing

Local sources in Konduga LGA of Borno State told one of our correspondents on Saturday that the su***de bomber was burnt beyond recognition.

It was also gathered that those who were injured in the incident were rushed to a nearby hospital.

“It is a busy joint where people come together, buy food and eat. There were passersby and others.

“Everything was going normal until a loud sound was heard. It was a devastating moment. Many people died,” another local source in Borno confirmed

It was learnt that the victims were laid to rest on Saturday in line with Islamic rites at the Konduga cemetery.

It was gathered that separate burial arrangements were done for the victims.

The Borno State Police Command confirmed the su***de incident in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, on Saturday.

According to the statement, the explosion occurred around 9.30 pm on Friday when the su***de bomber, who had an IED strapped to her body, infiltrated a crowded section of the market and detonated the device, killing 12 people.

Police probe Kano blast

In Kano State, the blast on Saturday was reportedly from a military mortar bomb suspected to be in a truck transporting carbine.

Confirming the incident, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, said investigations had commenced on the matter, just as he confirmed that the vehicle involved in the incident came from Yobe State.

“Five people have been confirmed dead, while 10 others are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” the commissioner said.

He added that it was too early to say whether any security personnel were among the victims.

Bakori assured the public that the police would carry out a comprehensive investigation on the matter, even as he called for calm and cooperation.

“We are working diligently to uncover the cause of the explosion and assess the full extent of the damage. More details will be made available as the investigation progresses,” Bakori stated.

Bandits kill 30 in Kebbi

Meanwhile, the Kebbi State Government has confirmed that 30 people lost their lives in the recent wave of banditry attacks in parts of the Zuru Emirate, describing the development as deeply tragic and unacceptable.

The confirmation came during a condolence visit led by the State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, to the affected communities of Tadurga in Zuru Local Government Area and Kyebu in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area.

The deputy governor, who represented Governor Nasir Idris, sympathized with families of the deceased and assured residents that government will intensify efforts to strengthen security across the state.

Senator Tafida said the state government will take decisive steps to secure all vulnerable areas, including blocking all illegal entry points into Tadurga and Kyebu, which have become targets of deadly attacks.

He offered prayers for the repose of the victims and asked Almighty Allah to grant their families the fortitude to bear the loss.

In a compassionate gesture, the Deputy Governor announced a relief donation of N50 million to the affected communities—N25 million each to Tadurga and Kyebu—to support victims’ families and rebuild the devastated communities.

Mob kills 12 Plateau wedding guests

The Plateau State Police Command has arrested 22 suspects in connection with the killing of 12 travellers by irate youths in Mangun village, Mangu Local Government Area of the state, on Friday night.

Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Alfred Alabo, confirmed this in a statement on Saturday.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. It was gathered that the victims were passengers of an 18-seater bus belonging to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State.

It was learnt that the travellers, including children, were reportedly attacked in an ambush while travelling from Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State to attend a wedding ceremony in Qua’an Pan LGA of Plateau State.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurs around 8 pm when the travellers took a wrong turn and stopped to ask for directions.

“Instead of helping the confused travellers, the assailants, driven by deadly assumptions, descended on the bus, viciously attacking the occupants, killing 12, injuring 12 others, and setting the vehicle ablaze.

“Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Mangu for medical attention,” an eyewitness said.

Troops under Operation Lafiyan Jama’a rescued the injured victims from the area.

In a video seen by one of our correspondents, some of the military personnel who carried out the rescue operation were heard attributing the attack to the absence of security checkpoints in the area.

However, the police was silent on the number of victims killed in the attack.

Alabo disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, visited the scene of the incident and had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

“Consequently, 22 suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The CP has also deployed men from the State CID and directed them to launch an intensive investigation into the matter,” police spokesperson said.

A survivor, Ibrahim Umar, recounted the horrific experience, saying, “We stopped to ask for directions, and before we knew it, they surrounded us and started beating and attacking us with dangerous weapons. They killed the driver first and then attacked others. They burned the bus with the corpses inside.”

Describing the act as barbaric, tragic, and cruel, Abbas bemoaned a situation where Nigerians who go about their peaceful activities are killed unprovoked.

The speaker, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, on Saturday, called for calm and urged the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

“The killings of Nigerians in whatever guise must stop forthwith. We cannot afford to be losing the lives of our compatriots in such cruel and barbaric manner. This is condemnable and unacceptable.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed in this unfortunate incident,” the statement read in part.

When I Remember What Fubara Did To Me, I Weep, Says Wike

Speaking during his monthly media chat, Wike said he supported Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers State in every way possible but was sabotaged in the end.

“He gave himself to be a tool for those who couldn’t fight me to fight me. When people talk about resolution, sometimes when I go back, in my quiet moments, I play the video of the speeches of the governor, what he said, what he did to me, I weep.

“Was it necessary? This was somebody who brought you, gave you food, gave you everything, did things for you then you became a tool for his enemies to fight him,” the Minister said.

Trump ambushes South African leader with claim of Afrikaners being 'persecuted'

A meeting meant to soothe tensions between the US and South Africa instead spiralled as President Donald Trump put his counterpart on the defensive with claims that white farmers in his nation were being killed and "persecuted".

On Wednesday, a week after the US granted asylum to nearly 60 Afrikaners - a move that rankled South Africa - President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the White House to reset the countries' relations.

Instead, Trump surprised Ramaphosa during a live news conference with widely discredited claims of a "white genocide" in South Africa.

He played a video showing an exhibit during a protest of several crosses lining a road - claiming they were burial sites for murdered white farmers.

Trump said he did not know where in South Africa it was filmed. The crosses, in fact, are not actual graves, but appear to be from a 2020 protest after a farming couple was killed in KwaZulu-Natal province. Organisers said at the time that they are an exhibit representing farmers killed over years.

Before Wednesday's White House meeting, South Africa's leader stressed that improving trade relations with the US was his priority. South African exports into the US face a 30% tariff once a pause on Trump's new import taxes ends in July.

Ramaphosa hoped to charm Trump during the meeting, bringing along two famous South African golfers and gifting him a huge book featuring his country's golf courses.

The meeting came days after the arrival of 59 white South Africans in the US, where they were granted refugee status. Ramaphosa said at the time they were "cowards".

Still, the Oval Office meeting began cordially, until Trump asked for the lighting to be lowered for a video presentation. The mood shifted.

Tinubu Govt Sue's Natasha Sparking Global Outrage

The Federal Government has filed rare criminal defamation charges against opposition Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, sparking questions about abuse of power.

Though legally permitted, the case, driven by political rivals like Senate President Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, raises concerns of selective justice and using state machinery to silence critics ahead of 2027.

A Nigerian billionaire and investor has bought the Panama Canal ports built by the US for $23 billion.

Adebayo Ogunlesi's GIP acquires the port
The deal will give the BlackRock consortium control over 43 ports in 23 countries, including Balboa and Cristobal in Panama and others in Mexico, the Netherlands, Egypt, Australia, Pakistan, and elsewhere.

Global Infrastructure Partner, a subsidiary of BlackRock, owned by Adebayo Ogunlesi, acquired the Panama Canal Ports for $23 billion.

In an address to the nation on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump pledged to reclaim the Panama Canal, vowing to fulfil his promise to retake the critical waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans — a pledge that has now drawn in some of the biggest names in global finance, including Adebayo Ogunlesi, the Nigerian-born chairman of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), who played a key role in the $22.8 billion takeover of 43 ports, including two at either end of the canal.

“We’ve already started doing it,” Trump said, referencing a “large American company” that had, just hours earlier, secured control of the strategically vital ports according to a report in the London Financial Times.

The deal in question is BlackRock’s acquisition of the ports, previously owned by billionaire Li Ka-shing’s CK Hutchison. Trump and top administration figures, including Senator Marco Rubio, were briefed on the transaction by BlackRock’s chief executives.
