Qatar Introduces Stricter Visa Rules Targeting Nigerian Men Traveling Alone
Qatar has introduced new visa restrictions that prevent Nigerian men traveling without family members from obtaining tourist or transit visas, a policy authorities say is aimed at curbing visa overstays.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the directiveāeffective around September 5, 2025āapplies to both fresh and pending applications. Under the new rules, only women and families are eligible to apply, while men traveling alone will only be considered if accompanied by relatives. Applicants must also present confirmed return tickets and book accommodation exclusively in five-star hotels before visa approval.
The decision marks a significant setback for many Nigerians, particularly male business travelers, students, and transit passengers who rely on Doha as a gateway to Asia and Europe. āThis will hit a lot of Nigerians who use Qatar Airways to connect to Asia or Europe. For men without families, itās essentially a travel ban,ā a travel industry insider told Vanguard.
Qatari officials have defended the policy as a necessary measure to address the issue of overstays. However, analysts caution that it may strain diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Qatar while limiting people-to-people exchange. Male travelers may now be forced to cancel trips or adjust plans under stricter and more expensive requirements.
Visa-related frictions between the two countries are not new. In 2019, former Senate President Bukola Saraki urged Qatar to ease its entry restrictions for Nigerians, while in 2023, ex-Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika called for more equitable treatment. The latest directive, however, is considered far tougher, singling out Nigerian men traveling alone as its main focus.Qatar Introduces Stricter Visa Rules Targeting Nigerian Men Traveling Alone
