A MESSAGE OF HOPE AND PROGRESS TO THE GREAT PEOPLE OF EKITI STATE

By: Hon.Agidi Tope.

My dear good people of Ekiti State,

As we approach the forthcoming elections, let us stand together with hearts full of hope, faith, and unity. Ekiti has always been known for her wisdom, resilience, and dignity — and now, more than ever, our future shines bright with promise.

Under the leadership of Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO), our dear state has witnessed remarkable strides in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and workers’ welfare. Roads are being built, schools are being revitalised, farmers are being empowered, and opportunities for our youth are growing every day.

Yet, this is only the beginning. Greater things are ahead for Ekiti — a future of peace, safety, and prosperity for every man, woman, and child. A future where every citizen enjoys the dividends of good governance and where development reaches every corner of our land.

Let us continue this journey together. Let us protect our peace, uphold our values, and strengthen the foundation of progress we have begun to build. As you go out to vote, remember — your vote is your voice for continuity, stability, and growth.

Vote for peace.

Vote for progress.

Vote for prosperity.

Vote BIODUN OYEBANJI for a second term.

Together, we will make Ekiti greater than ever before.

Ekiti a gbe wa o!

Rewriting History: A Caution Against Distorted Narrative

By Ife Arowosoge

As we celebrate Ekiti at 29 and Nigeria at 65, it is appropriate to reflect on our journey, to honour those who laboured for our progress, and to defend the integrity of our collective memory. But it is equally important to challenge any effort to distort or monopolize the true history of Ekiti State’s creation.

I write today to congratulate the sons and daughters of Ekiti for witnessing yet another milestone — 29 years of independence following a long and determined struggle for self-determination.

However, I must also express my disappointment with the ongoing media campaign, particularly by some journalists, that continues to elevate Chief Oladeji Fasuan as the central figure in the creation of Ekiti State.

With due respect, this narrative is not only exaggerated but deeply misleading, and it risks sending a distorted and inaccurate message to future generations. As the saying goes :
“Repeat a lie often enough, and it begins to sound like the truth.”

Let’s set the record straight. During the Abacha regime, several prominent Ekiti sons held strategic positions in government and played critical roles in lobbying for the creation of our state:

Ekiti Obas, led by Kabiyesi Ewi of Ado were the father's of the struggle

Chief Ayo Ogunlade, was then Minister of National Planning under Gen. Sani Abacha

Prof. Sam Aluko, was Adviser on Economic Planning to the Head of State , Abacha.

Chief Akin Omoboriowo, former Deputy Governor in Chief Adekunle Ajasin's administration started the struggle in 1980. He championed the first petition

Chief Bode Olowoporoku, former Minister of Science and Technology during Alhaji Shehu Shagari's Administration used his extensive political connections with the Northern politicians and his finance to support the struggle. He started the struggle with Omoboriowo and remained committed to it to the end in 1996 (16 years)

Prof. Tunde Adeniran, Prof. Joseph Oluwasanmi, Dr. Kunle Olajide and others from academic and professional corridors played crucial roles in their various capabilities.

Several National Assembly and Constitutional Conference members firmly supported the struggle

Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), whose influence and extensive network of high-profile clients across Nigeria played a decisive role in opening doors and mobilising national goodwill for the Ekiti cause.

Within the civil service, Chief Paul Alabi and Chief Dapo Alibaloye, both Ekiti-born civil servants in Abuja at the time, were instrumental in navigating the bureaucratic processes and offering quiet but effective support behind the scenes.

And yet, despite overwhelming historical evidence to the contrary, some continue to promote Chief Oladeji Fasuan, a sedentary, retired civil servant based in Ekiti, as the so-called “founder” of Ekiti State.

His primary involvement was collecting signatures from traditional rulers in support of petitions — a role that, while symbolic, does not qualify him to be elevated above those who led the struggle on political, economic, legal, and institutional fronts.

Even more questionable is Chief Fasuan’s claim in some of his narratives that he “led” the Ekiti delegation to the Head of State. This assertion defies logic. Can anyone truly believe that he, not Kabiyesi Ewi and other royal fathers, led such a high-level delegation? The official address to the Head of State was signed by Kabiyesi, the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, and yet Chief Fasuan now claims credit for leading that team. This is not only historically inaccurate, it is disrespectful to the traditional institution and misleading to future generations.

For the record, the full story has not been told. My forthcoming book, to be published when Ekiti turns 30, God willing, is titled:

Echoes of Freedom: The Two Struggles That Shaped Ekiti – From the Kiriji War to the Creation of Ekiti State (1877–1996)

The book will present a balanced and evidence-based account, setting the record straight for posterity.

It is also worth asking: Why did Chief Fasuan never respond to the article I wrote in 2020, when Ekiti marked 24 years, or to the same article republished in 2021, which appeared in numerous respected newspapers? In the article, I highlighted several distortions in Chief Fasuan’s narrative, yet he never responded. Instead, he has persisted along the same path, continuing to promote a version of history that misrepresents the true facts. And the press is buying into his narratives.

What adds to the concern is his continued attempt to blackmail and sideline genuine heroes like Dr. Dare Teniola, the first Secretary of the Ekiti Forum and the inaugural Secretary to the Committee for the Creation of Ekiti State, saying that Dr Teniola abandoned the struggle and disappeared. The truth is that Dr Teniola was fully committed to the struggle for many years and he relocated to the USA with his family few months to the end of the struggle.
Why attempt to discredit such a committed patriot to score cheap popularity?

The press owes it a duty to inform — not to mislead. True investigative journalism demands more than recycling a single narrative; it requires reaching out to key individuals involved in the events. Many of those I mentioned above are still alive and can provide firsthand accounts that would enrich and balance the historical record.

We owe it to history, and to the future generation, to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

STATEWIDE BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY, SIR SIMINALAYI FUBARA, GSSRS, ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2025

My dear good people of Rivers State

Recall that Rivers State was placed under a six-month emergency rule, declared by Mr. President, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the 18th of March, 2025, following the intense political crisis in our State.

2. It is without doubt that the last six months had been enormously challenging for our dear State under the emergency rule.

3. As your Governor, I accepted to abide by the state of emergency declaration and chose to cooperate with Mr. President and the National Assembly, guided by my conviction that no sacrifice was too great to secure peace, stability, and progress of Rivers State.

4. This was why I also resisted the pressure to challenge the constitutionality of the declaration of a state of emergency, the suspension of democratic institutions, and all other actions that we endured during this difficult period.

5. In the course of the six-month period, Mr. President graciously brokered the peace process with all the parties successfully. Our Leader, His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and I, as your Governor, have all accepted to bury the hatchet and embrace peace and reconciliation in the best interest of our dear Rivers State.

6. We believe the political crisis is now behind us and that peace and stability have once again returned to Rivers State, though not without the hard lessons learnt from the emergency rule.

7. The responsibility now rests squarely on us: the Government, the State House of Assembly, political leaders and stakeholders to put aside our differences, work for the common good, and advance the interests of our people above all else. We have a duty to ensure that the peace we have all embraced remains permanent in our dear Rivers State.

8. On behalf of the Government and the good people of Rivers State, I extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. President for his fatherly disposition and decisive interventions in resolving the political crisis and for graciously restoring full democratic governance to our State.

9. Personally, I will never take Mr. President's kindness for granted, and for that, I hereby reaffirm my utmost loyalty and eternal gratitude.

10. To those who have expressed genuine fears, frustrations, and uncertainty over the nature of the peace process, I assure you that your concerns are valid and understood. However, nothing has been irretrievably lost; there remains ample opportunity for necessary adjustments, continued reconciliation, and inclusiveness. We must all remember the saying... " the costliest peace is cheaper than the cheapest war".

11. Accordingly, let us, therefore, embrace this moment as a fresh beginning. Let us work together with renewed hope and determination to build a stronger, more peaceful and prosperous Rivers State. I assure you that we will continuously work towards ensuring that we carry everyone along.

12. Despite the turbulence, you are aware of the credible milestones our administration achieved in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other key sectors over the last two years.

13. Our immediate responsibility is to return to the path of governance and development by completing the projects which we started by ensuring none of them is starved of funds or neglected, thereby reviving our economy, protecting lives and property, and improving the wellbeing of all Rivers people.

14. I commit to working harmoniously with the Rivers State House of Assembly to recover lost grounds and accelerate the social and economic advancement of our dear State. I also renew my pledge to serve with the fear of God, humility and a high sense of duty.

15. I wish to sincerely thank you, the resilient people of Rivers State, for your patience, courage, and peaceful conduct during the six months of emergency rule.

16. I also extend appreciation to all stakeholders, religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, political actors, women groups, youths, concerned citizens at home and abroad, and well-wishers whose prayers and support sustained us through the challenging period.

17. Above all, let us draw strength from our shared identity as Rivers people. Our diversity is our greatest asset, and our unity the strongest guarantee of our future. We must rise above bitterness and division and channel our energies into rebuilding trust, fostering inclusiveness, and securing a peaceful and prosperous State for all.

18. Once again, I thank and appreciate our Father, Mr President, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his timely intervention and dedication to ensuring the restoration of peace and stability in our State.

19. 1 also thank our Leader, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON, the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for committing to the prompt resolution of the political impasse in the State.
20. I also wish to express my profound thanks to the President of the Senate His Excellency Senator Godswill Akpabio; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, His Excellency Dr. Abbas Tajudeen; and the distinguished members of the National Assembly for the role they all played in the resolution of the matter.

21. I thank the Honourable Speaker and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, respected elders, stakeholders and all concerned citizens for working together to resolve our differences and ensuring peace and harmony in our State.

22. Finally, I call on all citizens of Rivers State, regardless of political, religious, or ethnic affiliation, to join hands in rebuilding our beloved State and securing a future of dignity and progress for everyone. In all, I give glory to the Almighty God.

Thank you all.

May God bless Rivers State and all its people.

May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
