Malawi’s Miss World selection has sparked controversy 🇲🇼👑

Reigning Miss Malawi Thandie Chisi was not selected to represent Malawi at Miss World 2026. Instead, organisers chose her first runner-up, Ireen Navicha, who is also the daughter of Cabinet Minister Mary Navicha.

Organisers deny political influence, initially citing Chisi’s age and Miss World eligibility requirements, and later pointing to Navicha’s international pageant experience and community advocacy work.

The decision has nevertheless raised accusations of favouritism because of Navicha’s family connection to government. There is no public evidence proving that her mother’s position influenced the selection.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has donated $265,854 (about ₦352 million) to fund one-way air tickets for 500 distressed Nigerians returning from South Africa amid renewed xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks.

The donation, made under the leadership of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, will support the Federal Government’s ongoing evacuation efforts. So far, 1,640 Nigerians have been brought back home, with philanthropic donations helping to fund the return of some of them.

It is a commendable example of a religious organisation putting its resources toward helping people in distress 👏

Emails sent to Hillary Clinton by her adviser Sidney Blumenthal during the 2011 Libya crisis reportedly discussed Muammar Gaddafi’s plans to strengthen African unity, including an alleged pan-African currency backed by Libya’s gold reserves.

One of the emails reportedly claimed that Gaddafi held about 143 tonnes of gold and intended to use it to establish a pan-African currency that could challenge the French-backed CFA franc and increase Africa’s financial independence.

NATO launched an air campaign over Libya in 2011 under a UN mandate to protect civilians. The intervention later contributed to the collapse of Gaddafi’s government.

Gaddafi was captured and killed by Libyan fighters in October 2011, ending his more than four-decade rule over Libya.

Do you know Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland, nearly 3 times the size of the United States, more than 3 times the size of China, and over 9 times larger than India?

Yet, on many commonly used world maps, Africa appears much smaller than it really is. This is largely due to the Mercator projection, which greatly distorts the size of places farther from the Equator.

In a recent move, the United Nations adopted a resolution supporting the use of maps that more accurately represent Africa’s true size, drawing attention to the continent’s enormous geographical scale and challenging long-standing distortions in how Africa is visually represented.

Africa is enormous — and the colonial-era map doesn’t always make it look that way. 🌍

Ladi Kwali (1925–1984), the woman whose portrait appears on Nigeria’s twenty-naira note, was a renowned Nigerian potter. She was born in Kwali, in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was a traditional occupation among women.

From a young age, she developed exceptional skill in the craft.

Her talent eventually attracted international attention, and her distinctive pottery became known beyond Nigeria. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, her work was exhibited in London at the Berkeley Galleries, helping introduce traditional Nigerian pottery to audiences in Europe and America.

Ladi Kwali later became one of Nigeria’s best-known potters. She combined traditional Gwari pottery techniques with modern methods, creating works that earned her international recognition and numerous honours.

In 1963, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), despite having no formal education. Today, her legacy lives on through her art and her portrait on Nigeria’s ₦20 note, making her one of the most recognisable figures in Nigerian cultural history.
