🚨 Lagos Makes Major Strides in Fire Safety! 🚨

In 2024, the Lagos State Government rescued 450 lives from fire disasters and saved properties worth ₦117.12 billion, recording a 20% drop in fire incidents compared to 2023.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu credits this milestone to massive investments in modern fire-fighting equipment, technology, and community awareness campaigns.

Key highlights:
🔥 25 new fire stations built in the last 6 years, with 4 more coming soon
🔥 Over 60 modern fire trucks and upgraded firefighting kits deployed
🔥 Drones now used to detect fire sources in high-rise buildings
🔥 Response time target: From 15 minutes down to 5–7 minutes
🔥 7,870 facilities inspected & over 7,000 fire safety certificates issued

Commissioner Gbenga Oyerinde emphasized that fire safety is a shared responsibility between the government, private sector, and the public.

Sadly, despite the progress, 91 lives were lost and ₦19.5 billion worth of property could not be salvaged in 2024.

LAGOS SALVAGES PROPERTIES WORTH N117 BILLION, RESCUES 450 LIVES FROM FIRE

•State records 20% drop in annual fire cases, holds Fire Safety summit

•Sanwo-Olu: ‘Our advocacy, investments in fire safety yielded fruits’

Lagos State has recorded a sharp drop in emergencies related to fire incidents, rescuing 450 victims from potentially fatal fire incidents and salvaging properties worth N117.12 billion across the State.

The development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted, was the direct result of a sustained infrastructure support for the State’s emergency response teams and an intensive fire safety advocacy of the State Government aimed at reducing the risk of fire hazards.

The progress report, which put the reduction rate of fire incident in Lagos at 20 per cent in 2024, was rolled out at the second edition of Lagos International Fire Safety Conference (LIFSC) organised by the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations.

The two-day event with the theme: “Leveraging Technology and Community Engagement to Prevent Fire”, was hosted at Federal Palace Hotels, Victoria Island.

The 2024 Fire Report presented by the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margret Adeseye, said Lagos recorded a total of 1,952 emergency calls in 2024, out of which 1,607 were fire-related incidents that occurred with minimal casualties at the incident sites.

In 2023, Lagos Fire and Rescue Service responded to over 2,500 distress calls in cases related to fire and rescue operations.

Sanwo-Olu said the sharp decline in fire emergencies in Lagos in 2024 was not coincidental, noting that the development was a direct outcome of continuous efforts by his administration to provide modern fire-fighting equipment, deploy technology and improve mobility.

This, the Governor observed, had bolstered the capacity of the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service in responding to emergency situations as quick as it could to salvage lives and properties.

He said: “In 2023, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to over 2,500 calls. By last year, we responded to a number of emergencies that is lower than the previous year. This is a significant drop and what this means is that, our advocacy, communication and engagement efforts are working. It means Lagos residents are becoming a lot more conscious of their responsibilities to identify hazards that can turn to devastating fire disasters.

“Given the development, it also means that we have raised our ability to manage emergencies. We are beginning to see the effect of the synergy between the Government, private sector and communities in reducing fire hazard. The significant drop in the rate of fire incidents certainly proves something powerful about the strategy we have adopted. I strongly believe 2025 report will show more reduction in fire cases.”

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that his administration, in the last six years, had built 25 new fire stations across the State to beef up fire and rescue operations, adding that four more fire stations would be delivered in the coming months.

He added that his Government had equipped the State’s fire service with over 60 standard fire trucks in the last two years, in addition to firefighting kits.

Aside provision of modern equipment to combat fire, the Governor said the State had been focusing on leveraging smart technology and active community participation in building fire resilience in communities.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos had raised its fire-fighting capabilities with the acquisition of drones that could fly and to detect fire source over high altitude buildings.

He said: “We are retooling and refurbishing our Command and Control Centre. We are bringing highest level of technology into the Centre. We will have improved capacity to respond to emergency calls and dispatch necessary rescue infrastructure to any part of the State.

“We want to be able to have fire stations that will be closer to the communities. We currently have about 15 minutes response time to incidents. Our aim is to provide necessary infrastructure and skills that will enable us have five to seven minutes response time. This is what is befitting of a big city as Lagos.”

Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Gbenga Oyerinde, said the conference was part of activities the Ministry initiated to promote awareness about fire safety and enhance stakeholders’ cooperation.

Oyerinde said fire safety should not be seen as sole responsibility of the Government, but a shared mandate that required active participation from individuals, communities and the private sector.

“It is in this reason we have come together at this conference, brought experts to share perspectives on the latest best practices in fore protection and management”, the Commissioner said.

As part of moves towards reducing risk of fire injuries, Adeseye said Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service had reinforced its fire safety approach, inspecting 7,870 facilities in 2024 for fire risk assessments.

She said the agency issued 7,039 fire certificates to companies, hotels, restaurants, filling stations, schools, vocational centres, stores, hospitals and bakeries.

Despite the successes recorded in firefighting in 2024, Adeseye said the agency’s fire rescue operations recovered 91 casualties from incident sites, while properties worth N19.5 billion could not be salvaged.

•Minister, experts reiterate commitment to unlocking economic power of land in Nigeria

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday unveiled the pilot phase of its innovative "Identifier" project, a comprehensive digital addressing system designed to streamline geographic house numbering and street naming across the State.

The project, which will kick off in Ikeja, the state capital, next week, was unveiled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the sideline of the Nigeria Land Titling, Registration and Documentation Programme (NLTRDP) organised by the Lagos State Office of Electronic Geographic Information System (e-GIS) and Urban Development in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, at Victoria Island.

The digital house numbering system, a sophisticated approach designed to allocate a unique digital identity to each building throughout Lagos State, will play a crucial role in facilitating seamless navigation for emergency responders, utility personnel, and local residents, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery.

Speaking during the display of the house numbering plates, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the project is aimed at providing a unique digital identity to every property, enhancing navigation, service delivery, and overall urban management.

He said: "Lagos digital house numbering system is a novel idea. It is about technology, and that is one of the things that we are trying to achieve: using technology as a strong enabler to be able to resolve all our land issues, where from the comfort of your house you can access and resolve land title issues.

"It is still a journey, and we are not there yet, but this digital house numbering system is really more about ensuring that if you can get the address of a property, all the information that is needed on that property can be accessed, and people will see it."

Speaking about the Nigeria Land Titling, Registration and Documentation Programme, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Federal Government for the Renewed Hope Agenda initiative to unlock the economic power of land.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said electronic land documentation is the only way forward to reduce physical interference and build a future where land rights are secured.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, said Lagos State Government is committed to the project embedded with QR codes and local government-specific colour codes for easy identification.

He said the digital house numbering system project is a significant step towards modernising Lagos' infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its residents.

Dr Babatunde said with the successful implementation of the "Identifier project", Lagos State expects to see improvements in security, revenue generation, and overall efficiency in service delivery.

He said: "House numbering and documentation has to do with ownership. So one of the byproducts of titling and documentation in land administration is also house numbering and digital addressing systems. So this is a digital addressing system.

"The digital house numbering is part of technology, and at the back end, we have all the information that we can share with the public. You can scan the QR code to get the information about a land, particularly bills and some other important information that we may need to know whether a building has an approval or not. We are now in the age of technology. We need to embrace technology."

Speaking earlier, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, announced plans to improve land title to 50 per cent in the next 10 years as part of the efforts being put in place to unlock the economic power of land in Nigeria.

He said the initiative is aimed at modernising land administration and making land a viable asset for wealth creation, house delivery and inclusive growth, noting that states will retain full control over land administration.

According to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, over 97 per cent of land in Nigeria is not formally titled, limiting its use as collateral for loans and its value in property transactions.

He noted that with this initiative, all other states can now commence digitisation of land registries, integrate geographic information systems and adopt global best practices which have already been implemented in Lagos State.

Still on Tinubu, Aregbesola and Oyetola
By abiodun KOMOLAFE

That I hesitated to write this piece is intentional. That I've decided to write it now is also deliberate. I'll explain both reasons when the time is right.

I have met Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now President of Nigeria, a few times, but one meeting that stands out was at Lagos City Hall, in 2010. It was during the ‘Oodua, Know Thyself’ programme organized by the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), where I served as the Administrative Secretary at the time.

Our paths had also crossed earlier at Chief Bisi Akande's 70th birthday celebration in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, on January 16, 2009. I attended that event in my capacity as the ARG Administrative Secretary as well. I vividly remember even shaking hands with the Asiwaju of Lagos.

I didn't know Rauf Aregbesola, but my support for him over other contenders for the political soul of Osun State was based on principle. One event led to another and we eventually met a few times before his re-election bid.

My first encounter with Gboyega Oyetola, then Chief of Staff (COS) to Governor Aregbesola, was in 2014. It was during the buildup to the Osun governorship election, in which Aregbesola was seeking reelection on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket. I had expressed my interest in monitoring the election. The governor gave his blessing and told me to 'go and see' his COS.

In 2015 or thereabouts, I visited Governor Aregbesola with Bola Ilori. During our visit, I was deeply moved hearing Aregbesola speak glowingly about Tinubu. He told us he had no bank account and lived day-to-day. He even recounted a time when he was broke, and “Asiwaju gave” him “the N5 million” he was “spending”, adding he'd “not hesitate to go back to” him if it ran out. For me, this fraternal bond was truly remarkable.

Fast forward to October 5, 2016. I wrote an article titled, 'Is Tinubu right or wrong?', which was a full-page publication in a national daily. This piece followed attacks on the Jagaban of Borgu for calling for John Odigie-Oyegun’s resignation as APC National Chairman. Two days later, Aregbesola phoned me and thanked me for the article. That phone call led to me becoming a member of his media team as a Senior Special Assistant on Media, a position I held until November 26, 2018.

In 2017, I visited Oyetola to passionately plead with him to resolve some lingering disagreements within the governor's Media Team. The feud was already gaining traction and threatened to affect our productivity. After visiting him on the same matter three times, the COS told me on my fourth visit that he needed his principal's approval before he could do anything. I've also heard Aregbesola describe Oyetola as "richer than me", "well read and sound upstairs," and "not coming into office as Osun governor to steal".

On December 4, 2020, Oyetola appointed me as an SSA in his media team. I held this position until November 26, 2022. During this time, a profound bond formed between us, growing into a lasting father-son relationship that continues to this day.

During his tenure as Osun State Governor, I often witnessed Aregbesola stand at attention, with his right hand on his chest, whenever the anthem, ‘On your mandate we shall stand’, was chanted. I also heard him say on multiple occasions that, after God and his mother, Tinubu was the next most important person in his life.

I even learned that Asiwaju so trusted Rauf that he’s one of the few lieutenants who could enter his bedroom at any time. In return, Rauf was always prepared to lay down his life for Asiwaju's interests. This loyalty was evident at the Lagos City Hall event, where Aregbesola and Sola Ebiseni, a representative of former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, nearly came to blows. Only the timely intervention of Dimeji Bankole, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Fola Adeola, a co-founder of GTBank, prevented a fight.

Why is it necessary to discuss a link among Tinubu, Aregbesola and Oyetola as well as any attempt to prevent or end any perceived schism amongst them? It is important because they represent a current of thinking, not just in the Southwest but nationally.

With Tinubu's emergence during the fight for democracy, a once-dormant, dominant tradition was reignited in Yorubaland. This rich ideological framework, which Tinubu, Aregbesola and Oyetola are the custodians of, is worth reviving. Bringing its standard-bearers back together is crucial because they represent a unique approach to sociopolitical and economic development. If they are the true heirs of the Yoruba renaissance, what is the relevance of the “two-fighting” that Yorubaland is now immersed in?

The Yoruba tradition, which predates the 1886 Ekiti-Parapo War Treaty, is built on principles similar to the ‘Social Market Economy’ concept later popularized in post-war Western Germany. This approach, echoed in the APC’s 2023 presidential manifesto, has roots in the 1948 Afenifere position and the 1951 Action Group manifesto to ‘Make Life More Abundant.’ This powerful tradition is too significant to be obscured by internal disputes among its proven bearers.

The conventional wisdom is that Tinubu's tenure will end in 2031. But the need for the Southwest's political and economic development is eternal. This raises key questions about the framework and ideological direction after 2031. Disputes about strategies and tactics are inevitable in any political camp, anywhere in the world, and at any time in history. Rather than papering over the cracks, a thorough examination is necessary to permanently end the schism.

The decision to establish the South West Development Commission (SWDC) is a masterstroke for the region. With the untimely death of institutions like the Cooperative Bank, the Western Nigeria Development Corporation (WNDC), and the Western Nigerian Finance Corporation (WNFC), the Southwest has been deprived of crucial financial capital for decades.

The emergence of the SWDC, led by Olu Adetunmbi and Charles Akinola, offers hope for reigniting a fundamental development thrust. Without a robust capital mobilization mechanism, the region will likely continue to underperform, which would be tragic given its vast potential and growing population.

The president deserves commendation for this game-changing intervention. It will be remembered in positive ways by economic historians in fifty or more years down the road. This is why the focus should be on the long-term development of the Southwest rather than on temporary disenchantments.

Since 1999, Tinubu has evolved into a pivotal historic persona, it is imperative that he now leverages his avuncular mien to rally the progressive forces in the Southwest around the banner of progress. As of today, nobody else has the clout to do so!

May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!
