✨ “Dust to Dust, Ashes to Ashes”

A Sermon of Hope and Eternal Promise

Main Scripture:

> “For dust you are and to dust you shall return.” — Genesis 3:19

🌿 As I Was Meditating…

As I was meditating before the Lord, He gave me this Bible verse:

“For dust you are and to dust you shall return.”

And the Lord began to explain it to me deeply in my spirit.

He reminded me that this life is temporary. He showed me humility. He showed me dependence. He showed me eternity.

And this is what He placed in my heart.

1️⃣ The Reality of Our Humanity

“Dust to dust, ashes to ashes” reminds us of a powerful truth: we are human.

When God created man, He formed him from the dust of the ground. We are beautifully made, yet fragile.

No matter our status, wealth, or achievements — we all return to the earth.

Kings return to dust.
Rich and poor return to dust.
Young and old return to dust.

This humbles us.

It reminds us that life is temporary.
The body is temporary.
But the soul is eternal.

2️⃣ The Breath That Makes the Difference

In Genesis 2:7, the Bible says God breathed into man’s nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

Dust alone is nothing.
But dust with God’s breath becomes life.

The Lord showed me that what makes the difference in our lives is not education, beauty, influence, or followers — it is the breath of God.

Without Him, we are just dust.
Without His Spirit, ministry is empty.
Without prayer, service is powerless.

But with His breath — we carry divine purpose.

3️⃣ Ashes Represent Brokenness

Ashes in the Bible represent mourning, repentance, and humility.

In times of grief, people would sit in ashes as a sign of surrender before God.

Ashes say:

“Lord, I am nothing without You.”
“Lord, I repent.”
“Lord, I need You.”

Sometimes God allows us to walk through seasons that feel like ashes:

Rejection

Financial challenges

Betrayal

Loss

Broken dreams

But even in ashes — God is working.

4️⃣ From Ashes to Glory

The beautiful promise is this:

> “He will give beauty for ashes.” — Isaiah 61:3

God does not leave us in the dust.
He does not abandon us in the ashes.

Through Jesus Christ, death was defeated.

At the cross, it looked like ashes.
At the tomb, it looked like dust.
But on the third day — resurrection power!

Because of Jesus:

The grave is not the end.
Dust is not the final chapter.
Ashes are not your identity.

🔥 Conclusion

Yes, we are dust.
Yes, we return to ashes.

But we are also children of a living God.

And one day, when the trumpet sounds, the same God who formed us from dust will call us again — not to death, but to eternal life.

Let us live humbly.
Let us live purposefully.
Let us live ready.

Because dust may return to dust…
But the spirit belongs to God.

Amen and Amen

Thank you Jesus
God bless you
Jesus is Lord
Jesus loves you

Ten Practical Things You Can Do This Lent

1. Decide to save ₦1k or ₦2k every day throughout the forty days of Lent. At the end, give the money to someone in need or help pay someone’s school fees.

2. Go through your wardrobe. Select clothes you have not worn for about a year. Wash and iron them properly, then give them out. Let it cost you something.

3. If you fast by skipping breakfast or lunch, give the money you would have spent on those meals to someone in need.

4. Make it a duty to attend Mass throughout this Lent. Also pray your Rosary daily and the Stations of the Cross once a week. It may not be easy at the beginning, but push yourself. Growth requires effort.

5. Many young people are in relationships. During Lent, abstain from dirty chats and sexual activity. Ideally this should not be seasonal, but start now and grace will strengthen you.

6. Moderate your social media time. Choose specific times to come online and be intentional about who you listen to and what you consume. Do not feed your soul with garbage.

7. Visit the elderly, the sick, or the homeless, perhaps once a week during Lent. Do it quietly. You do not need your phone to record your charity. Let your almsgiving remain silent.

8. Be the one who cleans the house this season. Do the laundry even for your siblings or parents without being asked. Charity truly begins at home.

9. Delete pornographic videos and pictures on your phone. Mute contacts or statuses that trigger you to sin. Discipline yourself against visiting immoral sites, and when private videos leak online, refuse to look for them.

10. Trust God. Believe He loves you and will not fail you. Reduce or better still stop running from one church to another in search of miracles.

Gospel of the Day (Matthew 6,1-6.16-18)

Jesus said to his disciples: "Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you."

Prayer Before Ash Wednesday

Heavenly Father,
As I prepare to enter the sacred season of Lent,
I come before You with humility and gratitude.
Lord, on this holy eve of Ash Wednesday,
I pause to reflect on my life
on my weaknesses, my failures, and the times
I have chosen my will over Yours.
You formed me from dust,
and to dust I shall return.
Yet in Your infinite mercy,
You breathe Your Spirit into me
and call me Your beloved child.
Father, cleanse my heart.
Strip away pride, selfishness, and distraction.
Create in me a clean heart,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
As I receive the ashes,
may they not be merely a sign on my forehead,
but a seal upon my soul
a reminder that life is short,
grace is precious,
and eternity is real.
Give me the grace to fast with sincerity,
to pray with fervor,
and to give with generosity.
May this Lent not be routine,
but a true journey of conversion.
Break whatever separates me from You.
Heal whatever is wounded within me.
Strengthen me to carry my cross with Christ.
Through the intercession of
Blessed Virgin Mary
and all the saints,
lead me closer to Your Son.
I surrender this Lenten journey to You.
Let it bear fruit in holiness, repentance, and love.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.

Gospel of the Day (Mark 8,14-21)

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
He enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."
They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread.
When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?
Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember,
when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve."
When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up? They answered (him), "Seven."
He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"
