Meet Engr Nnamdi Ezeigbo from Nsukwe, Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA, Abia State:-The Man Behind Tecno, Infinix, and SLOT Nigeria
1. The Struggle: 2 years jobless after graduation
Nnamdi Ezeigbo was born Aug 4, 1966 in Sapele, Delta State to a humble family. His mom sold bread and he hawked it after school.
He studied Electrical/Electronic Engineering at YabaTech, then Computer & Electronics Engineering at LASU. His dream was to work for Chevron or Mobil.
After NYSC at Guinness Nigeria in 1996, he spent 2 years roaming the streets looking for a job. No luck. “Survival instinct pushed him into business.
2. The Start: A corner in a bookshop ub 1998
After graduation, life wasn’t rosy. Despite his qualifications, he couldn’t find a job, instead of waiting, he did a 6-month apprenticeship learning computer repairs. But when he noticed his boss prioritized profit over customer satisfaction, he left and moved to start his own. There, he began repairing computers and later diversified into phone accessories when mobile phones started gaining popularity in Nigeria. His integrity, mutual trust and good relationship with his customers was what gave him his first break in business. One day, an old customer he knew from his days as an apprentice, came to his little shop to see him. He told him he would love him to continue fixing his computers but would prefer he operated from a larger and more serene environment. To help him out, the customer brought some printers for Nnamdi to sell, from which he used the proceeds to set up a new shop for himself. He paid for the store at a then price of 180,000 Naira (He later bought that same store many years later for 100 million Naira).
From his new store, he began to sell computers. As his business grew, a lot of customers started to demand for slot stores in areas close to their vicinity.
3. The Break: Customers + GSM revolution
When GSM launched in Nigeria in 2001, he spotted the gap. Customers started asking for phones, so SLOT pivoted to mobile phone sales. While others sold fakes, SLOT built a reputation on trust, original phones, and after-sales support.
4. The Growth: From 1 shop to tech empire
1: 1998: Incorporated SLOT Systems Limited
2: 2006: Moved into full retailing
3: Today: 70+ retail stores nationwide + online store (slot.ng). From a small repair shop, SLOT grew into a leading retail outlet for phones, laptops, and accessories, with branches across major Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Rivers, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Delta, and more. Today, SLOT has over 70 outlets nationwide and has helped reduce unemployment by creating numerous job opportunities.
SLOT became Nigeria’s most reputable phone retailer.
5. The Grace: Tecno, Infinix + Impact
Nnamdi didn’t stop at retail, his vision didn’t stop there. In the year 2006, he noticed that Nigerians wanted phones that could support multiple SIM cards, as most people used different networks. When Nokia rejected his proposal to develop dual-SIM phones, he refused to give up and went to China, during his business trip to China, he met a former engineer from Bird Mobile Company and partnered with him to develop Nigeria’s first dual-SIM phone — Tecno. Their first model, the Tecno T101, failed because the SIMs couldn’t work simultaneously. But the improved version, the Tecno T201, began to gain market acceptance. By 2007, Tecno had become a sensation, and demand skyrocketed.
Seeing the success of Tecno, Nnamdi introduced Infinix to cater to different segments of the market — from the affordable to the premium class. Today, both Tecno and Infinix are among the most popular phone brands across Africa, competing strongly with global giants. Ezeigbo is widely credited with helping to popularize brands such as TECNO and Infinix in Nigeria and has become one of the country's most respected entrepreneurs.
He also gives back: Ezeigbo SLOT Foundation has trained 2,000+ youths in skills/entrepreneurship. Got an Honorary Doctorate + awards from Nigerian Society of Engineers.
Key lessons from his story:
1; Start with what you have: He used his engineering skill + a bookshop corner
2: Trust > Capital: He leveraged “relationship capital” for 7 years before bank loans
3: Be sensitive to opportunities: He saw GSM coming and pivoted fast
4: Solve real problems: Dual-SIM phones for Nigerians using multiple networks
From fixing computers in a cramped bookshop to building a multi-million-dollar tech brand. True grass to grace.
Lesson: Success does not always begin with money. Sometimes it begins with skill, integrity, persistence, and the ability to recognize opportunities when they appear. Nnamdi Ezeigbo's story proves that humble beginnings do not determine one's future.
