Falanas Vs Verydarkman: Court Fines VDM ₦200,000 Over Falana D+famation Suit

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has ordered social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), to pay ₦200,000 after dismissing his preliminary objections to a ₦1 billion d+famation suit filed by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, music star Folarin Falana (Falz).

Justice Fimisola Azeez ruled that VDM’s objections lacked merit and imposed ₦100,000 each in favour of Femi and Falz. The judge also instructed VDM to immediately file his defence in the ongoing suits.

The lawsuit stems from a video VDM posted on Instagram on September 24, 2024, which the Falanas described as d+famatory and d+maging to their reputations. Each is seeking ₦500 million in d+mages.

While Falz appeared in court, his father was represented by lawyers Ernest Olawanle and Femi Akinyemi. VDM, who was absent, was represented by his counsel, Marvin Omorogbe.

The claimants allege that the video contained libellous and sc@ndalous content, and they are asking the court to declare it d+famatory, issue a perpetual injunction restraining VDM and his associates from making similar posts, and compel him to publicly apologise on social media and in a national newspaper.

VDM had asked the court to dismiss the case on jurisdictional grounds, claiming the alleged offence occurred outside Lagos. The Falanas countered with a written argument and affidavit.

Justice Azeez sided with the Falanas, dismissed the objection, and ordered VDM to respond to the main d+famation case. The matter was adjourned to July 8 for mention.

This comes after Justice Mathias Dawodu struck out a related pre-emptive suit by the Falanas on April 15, ruling it was now academic given the ongoing case before Justice Azeez.

EFCC Hands Over 753 Recovered Housing Units from Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele to Housing Ministry

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has officially taken possession of a 753-unit housing estate in Abuja, recovered from former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The estate was handed over by the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Olanipekun Olukoyede, to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc Ahmed Dangiwa, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi.

This was revealed in a press release signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Salisu Badamasi Haiba on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Minister Dangiwa commended the EFCC for its sustained anti-corruption efforts and noted the importance of putting recovered assets to productive use. “This marks a significant milestone in ensuring that recovered assets directly benefit Nigerians,” he stated.

He added that a joint inspection will be conducted with the EFCC to assess the estate’s condition. Structural and integrity tests will follow, alongside a technical evaluation to determine the cost of completing essential infrastructure—fencing, roads, drainage, a police post, shopping areas, and recreational facilities.

Dangiwa explained that the estate will be offered for public sale and special government needs, with transparent processes through national advertisements and the Renewed Hope Portal. “We are committed to making this a model of accountability and public benefit,” he said.

EFCC Chairman Olukoyede described the handover as a demonstration of the ongoing success of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He emphasized that the estate, located on 150,462.86 square meters at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, was forfeited after investigations proved it could not have been legitimately acquired.

“We will not allow looted assets to be looted again,” he stated, affirming the EFCC will monitor the project and report progress to the President.
