Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention even when he had previously been granted bail is a slap on the Igbo nation, especially the elite. Indicted criminals like Abba Kyari wanted in faraway USA in the Hushpuppi scam case have been immediately released by the Nigerian authorities (from his pictures, one doubts he ever had jail time). Boko Haram, bandits and criminal elements in Northern Nigeria are ‘forgiven’ and rehabilitated with our commonwealth (billions of naira) after committing large-scale murders.
The message is clear and it is no longer about whether you support Kanu or not. It is about *Igbo interest.*
Does it mean that we lack men of timbre and calibre who can push for and orchestrate Kanu’s release (not Ohanaeze’s quarterly begging for his release without anyone taking them seriously). After all, Kanu’s offence is not as heinous as the aforementioned peeps.
When a child has done wrong, its mother saves it from being lynched in public, takes it home to caution, or discipline it away from the eyes of strangers. Same should be applied to Kanu. If not for him but at least, for ourselves and our prestige as Ndi Igbo.
