Fewer than 58,187 candidates on Saturday sat for the 2026 National Common Entrance Examination conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) for admission into Federal Government Colleges across Nigeria.

The Registrar of NECO, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, disclosed this in Abuja while briefing journalists after monitoring the exercise alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad. He noted that the figure represents a decline from the 64,578 candidates who registered in 2025.

According to him, over 31,000 female candidates registered compared to about 26,000 males, a trend he linked to ongoing efforts to promote girl-child education. He also stated that the examination was largely hitch-free nationwide, while expressing concern over cases of absentee candidates in some centres.

A powerful rainstorm swept through the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) on Friday, causing significant damage to campus infrastructure, including student hostels and several public facilities.

The storm severely affected Awolowo and Isa Kaita Hostels, where sections of roofs were blown off, exposing students' accommodation areas to harsh weather conditions. Several trees were also uprooted, while fallen branches temporarily obstructed movement on parts of the campus.

UNN management confirmed that no casualties were recorded and has activated emergency response measures. The university has commenced a comprehensive assessment of the damage and is considering alternative accommodation arrangements for affected students while repair works begin.
