Fresh unrest has erupted in Otonyasere community, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta state, after alleged attacks left homes and shops in ruins.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of September 16, reportedly saw gunmen from Abigborodo community in Warri North, unleash sporadic gunfire and torch properties worth millions.

Angered by the destruction, hundreds of Okpe indigenes staged a peaceful protest on September 23. The demonstration, led by Moses Newcome Odiete, national president of the Okpe Youth Council Worldwide, sent a strong message to government and security agencies.

“Okpe will not fold its arms while our people are oppressed,” Odiete said. He accused the Alema of Warri of sponsoring the violence over the disputed Okpe Osobo Forest Reserve, insisting the land belongs to the Okpe people.

“The boundary between Okpe and Warri North is clearly the bridge, yet they have crossed into our territory. They burnt homes, shot our people, and still allege that I led an invasion into their community. We want peace, but nobody has monopoly of violence,” he warned.

Community leaders backed his claims with historical records, while victims recounted harrowing tales of loss, including homes, shops, motorcycles, and savings.

Traditional leaders in Sapele accused the attackers of attempting to annex Okpe land through violence, urging urgent government intervention.

Protesters later marched to the Sapele Local Government Secretariat, where they were received by Felix Abone, executive assistant to chairman Bright Abeke.

Abeke assured them that the matter was already receiving attention at the state level and that a stakeholders’ meeting would be convened to prevent further escalation.

Executive Secretary of the African Institute for Statecraft, Adai Edwin Adai, has raised tough questions about alleged financial transactions linked to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, stressing that the scale of the alleged movement of funds suggests deeper institutional complicity.

Speaking in an interview with Voice of the People TV, Adai expressed shock over the system that allows such movement of capital across borders without being flagged.

"How did we even get to a system where a politician can literally amass that kind of humongous amount of money and then launder that huge amount of money undetected? The word is 'undetected.' The money flew from Nigeria and then landed in America, entered the American economy," he queried.

He insisted that the American government cannot be absolved from scrutiny, given the inflow of questionable funds into its financial system. "Even the American government needs to be questioned. It is not enough for us to say 'oh, it is Nyesom Wike.' How did the money—what are the processes? What are the procedures?"

Adai further emphasized that such transactions cannot take place without the active support of powerful institutions. "You and I know that that kind of humongous transaction cannot happen without the aid of the government, without the aid of the banks," he argued.

Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has hailed the late Chief Audu Ogbeh as a rare statesman and intellectual force, urging him to “tell Nigeria’s founding fathers that things are still bad” as he joins them in the afterlife.

Speaking on Monday at a night of tributes held for Ogbeh at the International Conference Centre, ICC, in Abuja, Ngige recalled the former agriculture minister’s quiet but commanding influence in government.

“People underrated Audu because he is slim and soft-spoken,” Ngige said.

“They think I’m the warrior because I have a beard and raise my voice. But when Audu speaks, his clarity and depth are unmatched.”

Ngige recounted how Ogbeh’s presentations at the Federal Executive Council often left even top officials, including former Secretaries to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal and Boss Mustapha, scrambling to keep up.

“After council meetings, they would go to his office to ask him to repeat everything,” he said. “His speed and knowledge were overwhelming.”

Calling Ogbeh a “precious gem,” Ngige said Nigeria had lost one of its finest minds “a man of eloquence, brilliance and a wealth of knowledge.”

In a reflective close, Ngige imagined Ogbeh reuniting with departed national icons.

“Audu, you are already there with Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, Obafemi Awolowo and the rest. Lecture them a little but tell them things are still bad in Nigeria, even if not worse,” he said.

Chief Audu Ogbeh, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and ex-Minister of Agriculture, died recently, at the age of 78.

The suspect, George Idumangi, a native of Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was arrested on Monday at the Lagos Immigration Office, where he was allegedly attempting to obtain an international passport to escape the country.

Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, had earlier transferred the case to Operation Puff Adder, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo, for discreet investigation. According to security sources, operatives tracked Idumangi across several Lagos locations, including Lekki, Ikorodu, Festac, Ikeja, and Orile, before successfully capturing him. During earlier raids, officers reportedly missed him by minutes but recovered a bag containing a T-shirt branded “IYC Tactical Team” and two mobile phones allegedly linked to the murder.

Prior to Idumangi’s arrest, the police had taken 23-year-old Victory Benard Henry, believed to be his girlfriend, into custody in Yenagoa. Items recovered from her included a pump-action rifle, five live cartridges, two empty AK-47 magazines, 10 walkie-talkies, 10 chargers, and three AK-47 rifle slings.

Investigations revealed that Victory allegedly lured Ekpebu into a fraudulent land deal, introducing him to Idumangi, who later collected N9 million from a supposed buyer. While Victory was said to have received N1 million for her role, the transaction quickly unraveled when the buyer demanded land documents. Ekpebu reportedly denied knowledge of the deal and directed the buyer to the property owner, sparking a confrontation with Idumangi.

According to police findings, Idumangi, along with accomplices Victor Shadrack (alias Doggy) and another identified only as Insurance, allegedly abducted and killed Ekpebu to cover up their fraudulent scheme and create the impression that the agent had absconded with the documents.

Confirming the breakthrough, CP Idu said: “After painstaking intelligence and coordinated operations, Mr George Idumangi, the mastermind behind the murder of Mr Richard Ekpebu at Bayelsa Palm, was arrested this morning in Lagos while attempting to flee the country. This success reflects the resilience of our officers, and I commend the good people of Bayelsa and the Prosperity Government for their support.”

The police said investigations are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices still at large.
