LAGOS, OSUN, OYO, OGUN DECLARE TUESDAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO CELEBRATE E ÌṢẸ̀ṢE DAY

The governments of Lagos, Osun, Oyo and Ogun have declared Tuesday, 20 August, a public holiday to commemorate the Isese Day celebration.

The announcements were contained in separate circulars on Monday by the commissioners of information for each state.

Bode Agoro, the head of service in Lagos, said the decision further reaffirms the governor’s commitment to provide necessary support to traditional institutions, promote indigenous traditions.

Agoro added that public workers in the state are to resume by 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

The announcement came shortly after the Ogun state government also declared Tuesday a work-free day to mark the festival in a post on X.

“Ogun State Government has declared Tuesday, 20 August, a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Isese Day, in line with the Dapo Abiodun-led administration’s firm belief in religious inclusivity,” the post reads.

According to a statement by Kayode Akinmade, special adviser to the governor on media and strategy, the work-free day will allow traditional worshippers across the state celebrate the festival.

The statement added that Ogun state “remains an exemplary federating unit with an enviable level of religious cohesion and harmony, even in the face of diversity”.

The government urged traditional worshippers in the state to celebrate in moderation and respect the rights of other religions during the festival.

It also charged worshippers to use the special festive period to pray for peace and economic advancement in Ogun state and Nigeria.

Both Oyo and Osun also approved Tuesday as public holiday for the celebration.

FRANCE SEIZED THREE NIGERIAN PRESIDENTIAL JETS OVER DEBT.

According to reports, a French court has approved the seizure of three presidential jets connected to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the media has learned. Three of the aircraft—an Airbus 330 that Nigeria purchased but had not yet received—were recently placed up for sale. Two of the aircraft are a member of the presidential air fleet of Nigeria.

Zhongshan, a Chinese business whose export processing zone management contract was terminated by the Ogun State government in 2016, filed an application that led to the presidential jets being seized.

Zhongshan was granted around $74.5 million in compensation by an independent arbitral tribunal presided over by the former President of the UK Supreme Court. However, Ogun State administration, with which Zhongshan is at odds, has not yet honoured the award.

Zhongshan has a business issue with one of the Federal Government’s subnationals, and this action has caused resentment for the latter.

A Dassault Falcon 7X at Le Bourget airport in Paris, a Boeing 737, and an Airbus 330 at Basel-Mulhouse airport in Switzerland are among the presidential jets that were taken into custody. They’re all presently having maintenance done. The Airbus was purportedly purchased by the Nigerian government for more than $100 million.

The planes cannot be moved, sold, or bought until Zhongshan is paid the $74.5 million that was granted to them. For every aircraft, documents have been served by bailiffs.

The Nigerian administration has not yet responded to this news.

The planes were seized in connection with the same dispute with Zhongshan that led to the recent seizure of Nigerian-owned premises in Liverpool, England, by a UK court. Zhongshan obtained charge orders on the homes, which are valued between £1.3 and £1.7 million, at 15 Aigburth Hall Road in Liverpool and Beech Lodge, 49 Calderstones Road in Liverpool.

The National Working Committee, NWC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has written the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, to ask the Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) to resign from the party and join either the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, or any of the opposition party.

APC, in the letter, also removed Senator Ali Ndume as Chief Whip of the 10th Senate and replaced him with Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North).

In a letter from the APC signed by National Chairman, Alhaji Umar Ganduje and the National Secretary, Senator Suŕajueen Basiru, respectively, to Akpabio, the party said that Ndume’s complaints about President Bola Tinubu are unbecoming and his utterances are not favourable to the Federal Government.

The request was put to voice votes by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and loudly affirmed by all the APC Senators.

The Southern Borno Senator who is conspicuously absent today, has been making critical remarks about President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, the economic hardship, food scarcity and the concomitant security crisis.

Ndume was not only stripped of his position as Chief Whip, but the committee he co-chaired as Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriations.

He has been moved to Chair the Senate Committee on Tourism.

ALLEGED N80 BILLION FRAUD: YAHAYA BELLO SEEKS COURT’S INDEFINITE ADJOURNMENT.

Former Governor Yahaya Bello has asked the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to adjourn the ongoing case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission indefinitely.

Mr Bello also asked the court to vacate its arrest order on him, pending the determination of an appeal he filed at the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division.

Mr Bello’s demands were stated in a letter by his counsel, Musa Yakubu. The letter was dated July 12 and addressed to the trial Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, ahead of Mr Bello’s arraignment scheduled for Wednesday, July 17.

The erstwhile Kogi governor is being tried for laundering N80 billion. But, in his appeal against his trial, Mr Bello has expressed fears over his fate if the case proceeds.

In the Appellate case with file number CA/ABJ/CR/535/2024, Mr Bello is seeking to set aside the warrant of arrest he considers illegally issued against him on April 17, 2024. He also wants a return of the case file to the Federal High Court chief judge for reassignment to another judge.

The appeal was filed against the decisions of the trial Federal High Court, Abuja Division, in charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/98/2024. The former governor is also seeking an order of the appellate court to set aside the service of the EFCC charge on him by substituted means, including the entire proceedings already conducted in the case.

In the letter, Mr Bello requested that further proceedings in the charge be adjourned sine die, pending the determination of the appeal currently pending at the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division.

A copy of the letter was also sent to the National Judicial Council in response to a letter to Justice Nwite by the EFCC, dated July 8, 2024 and filed on July 10, 2024.

In the said letter, the EFCC requested a variation of the earlier warrant of arrest issued against Mr Bello, additionally requesting that the various security agencies be specifically directed to carry out the earlier arrest.

LG AUTONOMY: Resign Now or Face Consequences – Oyo AAC to Makinde

AAC said the Governor’s worry about local government financial autonomy shows his administration lacks transparency.

The statement reads: “Makinde’s worry about local government financial autonomy shows his administration lacks transparency and is corrupt.

“Makinde should resign from office if local government autonomy doesn’t align with his corrupt governance style. We in the African Action Congress are not surprised by Makinde’s reaction from the day the Supreme Court granted local government financial autonomy. It’s obvious Makinde’s government lacks accountability and transparency in its dealings, which is why you see him ranting all over the media in the past days.

“Makinde’s headache is the local government funds. He knows the grassroots people will begin to demand better governance from their local administrators. Makinde is scared of being exposed, but it’s too late for him, which is why he wasted taxpayers’ money on organizing a selection process in the last local government elections.

“Makinde will not cease to frustrate anything that concerns the local government because he knows that’s where the bulk of their money comes from. His administration lacks accountability and transparency, choosing media packaging and propaganda over good governance. He should abide by the judgment and follow all due processes.

“Any kangaroo committee at the local government level to deceive the good people of Oyo State will not be tolerated. The people of Oyo State are well aware of the dividends of democracy that are about to happen if they can hold the elected chairmen and councillors accountable. Makinde should abide by the law and stop interfering with local government funds.”

BREAKING: Lagos State to ban Danfo, Korope from plying Lekki-Epe expressway on October 1

The Lagos State government has insisted that there is no going back on its plan to ban all unregulated commercial bus operations, such as Danfos and Koropes, along the Lekki-Epe corridor, from October 1, 2024.

The special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on transportation, Sola Giwa, told The Vanguard that the reminder on the planned ban, which is in line with the Lagos State Strategic Transportation Master Plan (STMP), was to dismiss rumours that the move had been suspended.

Ahead of the state government’s restructuring plans to improve the commuting experience in the area, they sought the collaboration of public transport bus operators, including Korope/Danfo bus drivers.

Mr Giwa stated that a stakeholders’ meeting was held with bus operators and union leaders on their need to comply before October 1 to successfully regulate and integrate the informal transport sector into the State’s Bus Reform Initiative using the corridor as a pilot test.

Expressing his dissatisfaction with the current state of bus operations on the corridor, Mr Giwa explained that the Ministry of Transportation and Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) has already inspected the corridor to identify limitations of seamless traffic flow along the expressway and adjourning roads as well as mapped out a systematic framework to address possible challenges.

Mr Giwa identified some planned solutions as the restructuring of the existing unregulated public transport bus operations on the Lekki Epe corridor, the deployment of high-capacity buses on the corridor as stated in the Lagos Transport Policy and the Bus Route Network, re-allocation and relocation of Korope/mini buses to inner route, and re-registration, and recertification of all buses.

TRUMP RALLY SHOOTING UPDATES: SHOOTER WAS A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN FROM PENNSYLVANIA , OFFICIALS SAY.

A shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials say.

A shooter is dead and an attendee was killed. Two attendees are critically injured. Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after being whisked off the stage and is being checked out at a local medical facility.

The president arrived early Sunday after cutting short a weekend trip to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

The White House said he would receive a briefing from Homeland Security and law enforcement officials on the attempted assassination of Trump later in the morning.

Vice President Kamala Harris was also to attend.

Trump’s private jet landed shortly after midnight Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport.

Video posted by an aide showed the former president deplaning, flanked by U.S. Secret Service agents and heavily armed members of the agency’s counter assault team.It was an unusually visible show of force by his protective detail.

Trump planned to spend the night at his private golf club in nearby Bedminster, New Jersey.

Asked if law enforcement did not know the shooter was on the roof until he began firing, Rojek responded, “that is our assessment at this time.”

“It is surprising” that the shooter was able to get off as many rounds as were fired, Rojek said. He added that “all the details of that will come out later investigation.”

Asked whether there was anything about the venue that made it particularly difficult to secure, State Police Lt. Col. Bivens deferred to the Secret Service, which was not present at the news conference.

Bivens said he wouldn’t speculate when asked “how close a call” it was for Trump

KENYA’S PRESIDENT RUTO DISMISSES ALMOST ENTIRE CABINET AFTER NATIONWIDE PROTESTS

Kenyan President William Ruto has announced the dismissal of almost his entire cabinet and consultations to form a “broad-based government” following widespread anti-government protests.

Ruto said his decision would apply to all ministers, including the attorney general, but it excluded Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.

“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations and other Kenyans, both in public and private, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government,” Ruto said in a televised address to the nation on Thursday, adding that he would announce additional measures later.

The East African nation was left reeling after peaceful rallies last month to protest planned steep tax increases flared into deadly violence, with police firing at crowds who stormed the Parliament of Kenya, leaving it partly ablaze.Led largely by young people, the protests plunged Ruto’s administration into the most serious crisis of his presidency, forcing him to abandon the tax hikes and scramble to contain the damage.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb, reporting from Nairobi, said the youth’s dissatisfaction with Ruto began before the controversial tax hikes were proposed.

COURT ORDERS BUHARI’S MINISTER, SADIA UMAR-FAROUK TO ACCOUNT FOR N729BILLION ‘PAYMENTS TO MILLIONS OF POOR NIGERIANS’

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered Ms Sadia Umar-Farouk, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disasters Management and Social Development to account for the payments of N729 billion to 24.3 million poor Nigerians for six months.

The court also ordered the former minister to provide the list and details of the beneficiaries who received the payments, the number of states covered and the payments per state.

The judgment was delivered last month by Hon. Justice Deinde Isaac Dipeolu following a Freedom of Information suit numbered FHC/L/CS/853/2021, brought by the Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project. SERAP said it obtained the certified true copy of the judgment last Friday.

In his judgment, Justice Dipeolu held that, “The former minister is compelled by the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act to give information to any person including SERAP.

“I therefore grant an order of mandamus directing and compelling the minister to provide the spending details of N729 billion to 24.3 million poor Nigerians in 2021.”

Justice Dipeolu ordered the minister to “provide SERAP with details of how the beneficiaries have been selected and the mechanisms for the payments to the beneficiaries.”

Justice Dipeolu also ordered the minister to “explain the rationale for paying N5,000 to 24.3 million poor Nigerians, which translates to five percent of Nigeria’s budget of N13.6 trillion for 2021.”

Justice Dipeolu also stated that, “The minister did not give any reason for the refusal to disclose the details sought by SERAP. SERAP has reeled out the relevant sections of the Freedom of Information Act 2011 that the minister contravened and has in line with sections 20 and 25(1) of the Act prayed this Court for an order of mandamus to direct and compel the minister to provide the information sought.”

Justice Dipeolu dismissed the objections raised by the minister’s counsel and upheld SERAP’s arguments. Consequently, the court entered judgment in favour of SERAP against the minister.

LEBRON JAMES, SON BECOMES FIRST FATHER AND SON TO PLAY TOGETHER IN NBA HISTORY

Four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James, the 39-year-old Lakers playmaker who is a four-time NBA champion, has said he would like to play alongside his son, Bronny James, next season — in what would be the first father-son combination in NBA history.

James, a guard for the University of Southern California, averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists for the Trojans last season after a stellar high school career and also impressed scouts at an NBA combine.

At a practice session last July, USC freshman James collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect.

The teenager was released from the hospital a few days later and doctors approved him playing both in US college basketball and, last month, in the NBA.
