WHEN GOD SEEMS SILENT — PART 1 OF 21
The Prayer God Seemed to Ignore
There are prayers you whisper.
There are prayers you cry.
And then there are prayers you pray so many times that you eventually stop asking God for an answer.
You simply become tired.
Maybe you know that feeling.
You have prayed about the same situation for months.
You believed.
You waited.
You tried to remain hopeful.
But nothing changed.
And somewhere deep inside, a frightening thought began to grow:
“What if God isn't listening?”
Hannah knew that feeling.
Long before her name became one of the most remarkable stories of answered prayer in Scripture, Hannah was simply a woman carrying a private pain that nobody around her could completely understand.
Every year, she went to the house of the Lord.
Every year, she prayed.
Every year, she hoped.
And every year, she returned home without the answer she desperately wanted.
The Bible tells us that Hannah had no child.
But her pain went deeper than those words suggest.
She wasn't merely dealing with an unanswered prayer.
She was living with the constant reminder of what she didn't have.
And sometimes, that's what makes waiting so painful.
It isn't the prayer itself.
It's watching other people receive what you've been asking God for.
Someone else gets the opportunity.
Someone else's family grows.
Someone else's dream comes alive.
Someone else's testimony begins.
And you quietly wonder:
“Lord, when will it be my turn?”
Hannah knew what it meant to smile outwardly while carrying sorrow inwardly.
Then came another difficult day.
Hannah went to the house of the Lord.
But this time, something was different.
She couldn't pretend anymore.
She was carrying too much.
The Bible says Hannah was deeply distressed, and she prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.
She wasn't performing for anyone.
She wasn't trying to sound religious.
She simply poured out her heart before God.
And then she made a vow.
If God would give her a son, she would give that child back to Him.
It was a prayer born from desperation.
But something happened during that prayer that Hannah could not yet see.
Her circumstances had not changed.
She still had no child.
There was no miracle in her arms.
No announcement.
No visible evidence.
Nothing that would have convinced a stranger that her prayer had been heard.
And yet...
Something had changed inside Hannah.
She had finally placed the burden completely in God's hands.
Then she walked away.
The Bible says that after she had prayed, her face was no longer downcast.
Think about that.
The situation had not changed yet.
But Hannah had.
She prayed before the answer arrived.
She trusted before she saw the miracle.
She walked away before she had proof.
And perhaps that is where some of us struggle.
We want God to change the situation before we change our posture.
We want the miracle before the faith.
We want the answer before the waiting.
But sometimes God begins His work in us before we ever see His work around us.
Hannah didn't know what would happen next.
She didn't know how long she would wait.
She didn't know how God would answer.
She only knew one thing:
She had placed her deepest pain before God.
And then...
She went home.
The next part of her story would change everything.
But Hannah didn't know that yet.
Neither do you.
You may be reading this today while carrying a prayer you have almost stopped praying.
You may have asked God for the same thing again and again.
You may even be wondering whether heaven has become silent.
But before you conclude that God has forgotten you, remember Hannah.
Silence is not always absence.
Sometimes the chapter feels empty because God hasn't finished writing it.
Your unanswered prayer may still have a story attached to it.
Your tears may still have a testimony attached to them.
And your waiting may still be preparing you for something you cannot see yet.
TODAY'S BIBLE VERSE
“And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.” — 1 Samuel 1:10
Hannah did not hide her pain from God.
She brought it to Him.
You can do the same.
A PRAYER FOR YOU
Father, for the person reading this who has been praying for a long time, please give them strength to keep trusting You.
When they cannot see an answer, remind them that You are still God.
When they become discouraged, give them peace.
When they compare their life with others, help them remember that their story is not finished.
Teach them to trust You even in the silence.
And when the answer finally comes, let their testimony become a reminder to someone else that You never abandoned them.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
BUT HERE IS THE QUESTION...
What if the prayer you are tempted to give up on is the very prayer God is preparing to answer in a way you never expected?
Don't rush past that question.
Think about it.
Because Hannah's story is only beginning.
