VDM AND THE GASLIGHT PLAYBOOK
"Hear both sides before you judge." Fair enough. But does he?
Yesterday, VDM listed what he's NOT guilty of, he didn't stəal, k!ll, rapə or chəat. But nobody was asking him about those things. The question was simpler, before you judge a story, did you hear both sides? That's his own rule. So let's check the receipts.
MERCY CHINWO & EEZEE TEE
When their dispute went public, VDM heard EeZee Tee's side, ran with it, and accused Mercy Chinwo of diverting funds and breaching her contract. When Solomon Buchi questioned whether he had also heard Mercy's side, VDM attacked the question instead of simply answering it. Mercy subsequently sued VDM for ₦1.1 billion over alleged defamation.
FALZ & FALANA
VDM amplified Bobrisky's leaked audio containing allegations against Falz and his father, Femi Falana. Falana denied the allegations and demanded a retraction. VDM didn't retract. Falana sued, and a Lagos court later ordered VDM to remove the publications. VDM eventually apologised to Falana.
PETER, PAUL, JUDE & PHYNO
This is where the contradiction becomes difficult to ignore. According to VDM's own account, Peter told him certain things privately, including what VDM said was Peter's claim that Phyno would be a key witness. VDM took that information to Phyno. Phyno denied it and, according to VDM, even wanted Peter put on the phone so he could ask him directly. VDM described Phyno's denial as a "red flag." But why stop there? Why not take Phyno's denial back to Peter and ask him to respond? And after speaking with Paul and Jude, why not take their responses back to Peter and let him answer them too
THAT IS WHAT "HEAR BOTH SIDES" IS SUPPOSED TO MEAN.
Nobody is angry because VDM discussed a family dispute. Linda Ikeji, Instablog and other blogs have reported family controversies involving Yul Edochie, 2Baba and others. But there is a difference between reporting what Peter said, then what Paul said, then what Jude said, and personally entering the dispute, revealing private conversations, introducing people who were not publicly named in the original allegation, and reaching your own conclusions.
So the question was never, why did VDM talk about a family matter? The question was, why did he do all of these after telling Nigerians not to judge a story without hearing all sides?
True is, VDM cannot demand a fair hearing for himself while dismissing the same demand when people ask him to apply it to the people he's criticising.
Nobody is asking VDM to stop talking. We're asking him to apply his own rule to himself.
That's not cancellation.
Na accountability be that.
