Otu to the Rescue: Emergency Intervention Begins at Landslide Stricken Community in Calabar

The Cross River State Government has commenced a swift intervention to address the devastating impact of a landslide in Calabar.

The intervention, initiated under the leadership of Governor Bassey Otu, is aimed at restoring access, protecting residents and preventing further damage to the affected area.

The Commissioner for Works, Hon. Pius Edet, was personally at the site to inspect the ongoing intervention and ensure quality work and swift delivery.

HON. ANKPO PIUS EDET JOINS GOVERNOR OTU ON INSPECTION OF JONATHAN BYPASS

The Cross River State Commissioner for Works, Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet, PhD, joined His Excellency, Senator Bassey Otu, on an inspection of the Jonathan Bypass to assess the flooding situation affecting the area.

The inspection followed concerns over the persistent flooding that has disrupted vehicular movement and affected residents and businesses along the corridor.

During the visit, Governor Otu directed that immediate remedial measures be implemented to address the flooding and restore normal traffic flow.

He emphasized that the safety and welfare of residents remain a priority of his administration and stressed the need for swift intervention to ease the hardship caused by the situation.

Hon. Ankpo Pius Edet assured the Governor that the Ministry of Works would commence the necessary remedial works without delay in line with the Governor’s directive.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to delivering durable infrastructure solutions that will improve mobility and protect lives and property.

Governor Otu Inspects Failed Sections of Calabar–Odukpani Road, Reaffirms Commitment to Infrastructure

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, on Monday carried out another round of inspection of ongoing road infrastructure across the Calabar corridor, accompanied by the Commissioner for Works, Hon Pius Edet Ankpo

During the inspection tour, the Governor paid particular attention to the failed sections of the Calabar–Odukpani Road, assessing their condition firsthand and receiving updates from the Commissioner and relevant officials on plans for rehabilitation.

Governor Otu reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving road infrastructure across the state, emphasizing that restoring critical road networks remains a top priority to enhance transportation, promote economic activities, and ensure the safety and convenience of road users.

The inspection forms part of the administration’s routine monitoring of infrastructure projects to ensure quality ex*****on, timely delivery, and effective intervention in areas requiring urgent attention.

On Wednesday, 8 July, the Federal Capital Territory Rent Regulation, Tenancy and Housing Stability Bill, which I am proud to sponsor, passed First Reading in the Senate.

As the constitutionaly recognised legislature for the FCT, the Senate is taking an important first step towards strengthening the Territory's housing framework.

Around the world, stable and well-regulated housing markets are recognised as essential to economic growth, social stability, and the protection of both tenants and property owners.

This bill seeks to promote greater certainty, fairness, and stability in the FCT housing sector.

It is my hope that, when enacted, this legislation will not only strengthen the FCT's housing framework but also serve as a model for similar reforms across the States of the Federation.

The Cross River State Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church honors the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Dr. Pius Ankpo, with an Award of Honour in recognition of his outstanding service, dedication, and contributions to the development of Cross River State.

The award was presented during the Church’s Annual Thanksgiving and Award Ceremony held in Calabar by the President of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s West and Central Africa Division, Pastor Prof. Bassey E. O. Udoh.

CRS WORKS COMMISSIONER INSPECTS COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY FLOOD

In response to the recent flooding in parts of Calabar, the Cross River State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon.Ankpo Pius Edet has assured residents of government’s commitment to tackling the menace through improved drainage infrastructure and enhanced environmental sanitation measures.

The Commissioner, accompanied by the Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Mr. Nsa Gill, and the Special Adviser on Community Relations, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of flood-affected areas including; Ibesikpo Street,
Mane Avenue by Atakpa Street, Atakpa Street, Atu by Weber Street
Hart Street and Jebs Street.

Addressing residents during the inspection, the commissioner identified indiscriminate disposal of refuse into gutters and drainage channels as a major cause of the recurring floods experienced across the city.

He explained that blocked drains restrict the free flow of water, resulting in widespread flooding during heavy downpour.

He therefore called on residents to support government efforts by maintaining clean surroundings and refraining from dumping waste into drainage systems, stressing that the protection and maintenance of public infrastructure require collective responsibility.

The Commissioner further noted that many of Calabar’s drainage channels were designed several years ago and can no longer adequately handle the increased volume of water

To address the challenge, he disclosed that the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has developed a modern drainage design that will be implemented in strategic locations to improve water discharge and reduce flooding in vulnerable communities.

Hon. Ankpo Pius also highlighted the drainage corridor around the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) as a critical concern. According to him, a recent assessment by the Ministry revealed that approximately 1.5 kilometres of the channel had been severely obstructed by debris, refuse, and other materials washed in through adjoining runoff paths.

He emphasized that restoring blocked drainage networks and promoting responsible environmental practices among residents remain essential to achieving a lasting solution to the perennial flooding challenges facing the state capital.

Residents of the affected communities commended the swift response of the state government and expressed optimism that the planned interventions would provide long-term relief from flooding and safeguard lives and property.

The motion condemns these attacks in the strongest terms, seeks firm assurances for the safety of Nigerians, demands accountability for perpetrators, strengthens support for affected Nigerians, and calls for coordinated action to prevent future xenophobic violence and protect African migrants.

It also serves as a poignant reminder that Nigeria stood firmly with South Africa during the struggle against apartheid—a legacy of solidarity that should be met with mutual respect, not hostility.

Cross River State Government Terminates Road Construction Contract Awarded to Sydney Construction Company

The Cross River State Government, through the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, has terminated the contract awarded to Sydney Construction Company for the construction of the Obanliku–Obudu–Abucheche–Mfom–Okpoma Road, citing poor performance and failure to meet contractual obligations.

Speaking during the contract termination exercise, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Pius Ankpo Edet, stated that the decision was taken because the contractor failed to deliver on the agreed terms and conditions of the project.

"Your contract has been terminated due to poor performance and failure to meet your contractual obligations," the commissioner said.

Hon. Edet emphasized that the Cross River State Government remains committed to ensuring that all awarded contracts are executed diligently and in accordance with the required standards.

He added that the state government is sincere in the ex*****on of its infrastructure projects and will not tolerate delays or substandard performance from contractors.

"Our projects are genuine, transparent, and visible to the people. We are committed to delivering quality infrastructure that will positively impact the lives of our citizens," he stated
