☠️ THE OXYGEN YOU'RE BREATHING HAS A VERY OLD STORY.

When you picture the organisms that transformed Earth's atmosphere, you might imagine forests.

But forests arrived much later.

Billions of years ago, microscopic organisms called cyanobacteria were already using sunlight to make food through photosynthesis. Oxygen was released as a by-product.

At first, that oxygen didn't simply make Earth better for life.

For many organisms living at the time, oxygen was toxic.

It reacted with minerals and chemicals in the oceans and atmosphere, and eventually began accumulating in the air.

This enormous transition is known as the Great Oxygenation Event.

It changed Earth's chemistry and helped create conditions in which more complex forms of life could eventually evolve.

And much later, plants colonized land and became another major force in shaping Earth's atmosphere and ecosystems.

So the next time you take a breath, remember:

We usually think of plants as passengers on our planet.

🌍 WHY IS THE WORLD GETTING HOTTER?

It is tempting to think of extreme heat as just a few unusually hot days.

But Earth's climate is a connected system.

More greenhouse gases trap more heat. The oceans absorb much of that excess energy. Drought can dry the land and intensify heat. Cities can trap even more warmth. Changes in atmospheric circulation can influence how long extreme conditions persist.

And the consequences don't stop at the thermometer.

They can affect water, food, forests, wildlife, energy use, cities and ultimately the people who depend on all of them.

The good news is that understanding the problem gives us something powerful: the ability to make better decisions.

🌍 THE PLANET ISN'T JUST GETTING HOTTER. IT'S CHANGING AROUND US.

When we talk about rising temperatures, it's easy to imagine a number on a thermometer.

But the real story is much bigger.

A warmer planet affects the oceans.
It affects rainfall.
It affects droughts.
It affects agriculture.
It affects forests and wildlife.

Scientists call this the Urban Heat Island Effect.

At the same time, many urban areas have fewer trees to provide shade and natural cooling, while tall buildings can trap heat and restrict airflow.

The result?

A city can be several degrees warmer than the surrounding countryside, especially during the evening and at night.

This extra heat affects more than comfort. It increases electricity demand, places extra stress on the human body during heatwaves, and can make cities more vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
