An estimated 40 million Nigerians carry the sickle cell trait (AS).
About 100,000 die annually from complications linked to the disease.
SCD is a genetic blood disorder where red blood cells lose their round shape and become rigid “sickles.” These cells don’t move smoothly through the body. They block blood flow, trigger intense episodes of pain (called crises), and over time, can damage organs.
For many warriors, it’s not just pain they battle, but stigma, fatigue, and endless hospital visits.
That’s why September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month — to shine a light on the resilience of those living with it, the need for better healthcare, and the hope that comes from knowledge and support.
This month, let’s not only step into new beginnings — let’s also stand together for awareness, compassion, and change.
Later this month, we’ll be spotlighting resources created by warriors for warriors. Stay tuned.
