One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners make is thinking their target market, target audience, and target customer are the same thing.
Spoiler alert: they’re not.
Here’s how they differ:
🩶 Target Market: The entire group of people who could potentially benefit from your product or service. Think broad demographics like “working moms in their 30s.”
🩶 Target Audience: A specific group within your target market that your marketing efforts are tailored to. For example: “working moms who value convenience and are active on Instagram.”
🩶 Target Customer: The individual persona or ideal buyer within your audience. This is where details like their pain points, preferences, and decision-making habits come into play.
Why does this matter? Because when you mix these up, your marketing feels like shouting into the void or you’re trying to reach everyone but connecting with no one.
As a social media manager, I’ve seen how getting clear on these distinctions transforms engagement and results.
It’s not just about posting content, it’s about speaking directly to the right people.
