Olawepo-Hashim Accuses Tinubu Govt of Dragging Nigeria Back to Abacha-Era Authoritarianism

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a human rights activist, former presidential candidate, and Accord Party chieftain, has alleged that Nigeria is sliding back into the repressive days of late military dictator Gen. Sani Abacha (1993–1998). He claims powerful figures linked to President Bola Tinubu’s administration are plotting to destabilise opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

This is an opposition critique amid ongoing political tensions. Nigeria remains a democracy, unlike Abacha’s military regime marked by widespread human rights abuses and suppression of dissent.

According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) 2026 Annual Report, Nigeria faces a severe crisis of religiously motivated violence, banditry, and insecurity. Abductions, killings, and fear have become a daily reality for many communities, with tens of thousands killed since 2009 and millions displaced.

Abia Commission Landmark Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal Umuahia :

It is my pleasure to announce the official commissioning of the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, now open for public use.

This modern multimodal transport hub can accommodate over 340 buses and features sustainable infrastructure, including independent power and water systems. It integrates with Abia State’s growing fleet of electric buses, with 20 already in operation.

The terminal is named in honour of Prof. Nnenna Nnannaya Oti, the INEC Returning Officer who demonstrated courage and integrity during the 2023 Abia governorship election. Her name symbolises a tribute to all who defended democracy against intimidation.

I commend the contractors, Planet Projects Limited, for their quality delivery, as well as the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, SSA Transport, Dr Obioma Nwaogbe, and their team.

I urge residents and the host community to take ownership of the facility, maintain cleanliness, and prevent vandalism. I also call on all Abians to pay their taxes regularly, as collective responsibility is key to sustaining development.

Together, we are raising the bar for a modern, safe, and sustainable Abia.

On Tuesday, we commissioned and handed over 35 Dignity Homes to 35 indigent widows across all 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State, in celebration of my husband’s 3rd year in office. The project, driven by my office, was officially commissioned at the home in Umuhute, Ahiake Ndume, Umuahia.

I appreciate the support of His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, OFR; Special Adviser on Policies and Interventions, Dr Christian Uche Anokwuru; the Ministry of Women Affairs led by Dr. (Mrs) Maureen Aghukwa; our contractors; and all who contributed to this initiative.

Each widow received a home for stability and dignity, along with immediate cash and food support. Sustainable livelihood programmes will also be rolled out for them.

Under Governor Otti’s administration, Abia will continue to prioritise interventions for the vulnerable. All glory to God.

First Batch of 300 Ghanaians Arrives in Ghana from South Africa Amid Xenophobic Fears

The first group of approximately 300 Ghanaians has arrived home from South Africa as part of a voluntary repatriation exercise. This follows anti-immigrant protests and fears of xenophobic violence, with over 800 nationals having registered for evacuation. The Ghanaian government is providing comprehensive reintegration support packages for the returnees.
