Don't write:
❌ "She drove a car."
Write:
✅ "She gripped the steering wheel of her father's old Toyota as rain battered the windshield."
Which one gives you a picture?
The second.
Why?
Because specific details create an image.
Instead of:
❌ "He lived in a big house."
Try:
✅ "The three-storey house had white columns, a rusting iron gate, and a garden nobody had touched in years."
📌 Good description isn't about using complicated words.
It's about choosing the RIGHT details.
Give readers something they can see.
Something they can hear.
Something they can feel.

In fact, the best antagonists don't think they're villains.
They believe they're RIGHT.
That's what makes them dangerous.
📌 Give your antagonist a reason.
Maybe they believe:
They're protecting their family.
They're correcting an injustice.
They're saving their country.
They're getting revenge.
They're doing what your protagonist refuses to do.
When your antagonist has a believable motivation, the conflict becomes deeper.
The question stops being:
"Who is good and who is bad?"
And becomes:
"Who is right?"
That's where powerful storytelling begins.

Overusing dialogue tags.

If every line says:
"he said."
"she said."
"he said."
"she said."
Your dialogue can start feeling mechanical.
Sometimes the action can show who is speaking.
Instead of:
"You're lying," she said.
He looked away.
"Look at me."
He stayed silent.
"You're lying."
Notice how the actions help carry the scene?
📌 Use dialogue tags when they're necessary.
Use action when it adds emotion or information.
But don't go overboard with strange alternatives like:
"he exclaimed."
"she proclaimed."
"he articulated."
Most of the time...
"said" is perfectly fine.
Simple writing often sounds more natural.

A character who has nothing at stake can walk away whenever things get difficult.

And if they can walk away...

Why should the reader worry?

📌 Give your character something valuable.

A relationship.

A career.

A dream.

Their freedom.

Their reputation.

Their family.

Their life.

Then put it at risk.

Suddenly, every decision matters.

Every mistake hurts.

Every victory feels earned.

Readers care when the consequences are real.

Don't just give your character a goal.

Give that goal a price.

‎The first draft is where you tell yourself the story.

‎The revision is where you make it worth reading.

‎❌ Unnecessary characters

‎❌ Plot holes
