Difference between Masters Thesis and Phd Thesis
What's actually the difference between PhD thesis and Master's Thesis/Dissertation?
So many of you have been messaging me this π
Fair question. Let's settle it.
A master's thesis asks you to prove you understand your field.
You review the literature, identify a gap, and build a coherent argument on existing research.
A PhD thesis asks you to change the field. You're not summarizing what's known... you're producing something that wasn't known before.
That difference shows up everywhere.
A master's thesis usually runs 15,000β20,000 words and gets done in a few months, often squeezed in alongside coursework and job hunting.
A PhD thesis can run anywhere from 40,000 to 100,000 words depending on your discipline and university, built over 3 to 7 years of independent research.
The literature review alone tells the story.
In a master's, it shows you've read and organized the field.
In a PhD, it has to justify your entire research question.. examiners scrutinize it because it's the case for why your work matters at all.
And the finish line is nothing alike.
Many master's programs need no formal defense.
A PhD ends with a viva β two to three hours, one room, examiners who can ask you anything, and outcomes ranging from minor corrections to a downgrade.
Neither is the easier path. They're built to test different things entirely.
