Can Nigeria achieve good governance without ethical journalism?
That question dominated discussions at the NUJ Correspondents' Chapel, Lagos State Council 2026 Press Week and Awards Ceremony, where government officials, media professionals and business leaders stressed the need for a free, ethical and responsible press.
Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, urged journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards and continue holding public office holders accountable to strengthen democracy and nation building.
Keynote speaker Dr. Festus Oshoba described journalism as a pillar of democracy, calling for stronger press freedom, improved welfare for journalists, continuous professional training and responsible use of digital technology and artificial intelligence.
Chairman of the occasion, Engr. James Ukachukwu, said credibility is the greatest asset shared by both journalism and business, adding that while technology will continue to evolve, integrity and public trust must never be compromised.
The event also featured a call by Comrade Abraham Akpabio, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents' Chapel, Lagos State Council, for journalists to promote accountability and national unity as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
