My 16-year-old son was caught shoplifting with a group of boys from his school. The store manager called me saying security stopped all of them after seeing items disappear during a chaotic moment near the back of the store.

My son insists he didn’t steal anything and claims he was only standing there while his friends took things. The problem is that he ran when security approached, and now everyone thinks that alone proves he’s guilty.

Some parents are demanding all the boys be punished equally because they believe anyone who stayed silent was involved. But my son keeps crying and saying he made a stupid decision by being around the wrong people, not by stealing.

I want to believe him because he’s never been in trouble before. At the same time, I know good kids can still make bad choices under pressure.
Now I’m torn between defending my child and making sure he understands how serious this situation is.
