Before You Leave the Hospital With Your Baby, Make Sure These Checks Are Done 👶
Many mothers carry their babies home without knowing some important checks were missed.
Don’t assume everything is fine know what should be checked before discharge.
FOR YOUR BABY (READ THIS CAREFULLY):
1. General Condition of the Baby
Your baby should be active, crying well, and breathing normally.
A weak or overly sleepy baby may need further observation.
2. Feeding is Well Established
Baby should suck properly and not refuse feeds.
Poor feeding is often the first sign of illness in newborns.
3. Passage of Urine and Stool
Baby should pass urine within the first 24 hours and pass the first black stool (meconium).
If not, it could mean a serious problem.
4. Check the A**s (Very Important!)
The a**s should be open and baby should be able to pass stool.
This is a life-saving check never skip it.
5. Umbilical Cord Check
Cord should be clean and dry.
No redness, swelling, pus, or bad smell.
6. Temperature Check
Baby should not be too cold or too hot.
Newborns cannot regulate temperature well.
7. Full Body Examination
The doctor or nurse should check the head, spine, mouth, eyes, arms, and legs.
This helps detect any abnormalities early.
SPECIAL CHECKS:
For Male Babies 👶♂️
Both te**es should be in the sc***um.
The urine opening should be at the tip of the p***s (not underneath).
8. Baby’s Weight is Recorded
Birth weight should be documented for proper follow-up.
9. Immunizations are Given
Ensure your baby receives BCG, OPV, and Hepatitis B.
10. You Are Told the Danger Signs
Watch out for: poor feeding, fever, yellow eyes, or difficulty breathing.
If you notice any of these, go to the hospital immediately.
Don’t rush home without these checks some conditions are not obvious at first glance.
A few extra minutes in the hospital can protect your baby’s life.
Birthing the same day and leaving within 24hrs is not advisable.
Did anyone explain all these to you before discharge?
