𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟳 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝘆 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸

Not long ago, I received an email from a publishing agent based in the UK.

A US publisher wanted to review my work for global electronic distribution.

The terms were attractive. Very attractive.

I smiled when I read the message.

Then something else crossed my mind.

I remembered the long road it took me to get there.

And the mistakes that almost stopped me from becoming an author.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗠𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀

I avoided asking for help and convinced myself struggle was a badge of honour.

I doubted my ability for years, and confidence came much later than it should have.

I questioned the value of my idea, so my manuscript sat unfinished for too long.

I chased big publishers too early and landed straight in rejection piles.

I felt unqualified and kept comparing my beginning to other people’s peak achievements.

I feared publishing costs and nearly abandoned the process altogether.

I blamed bad timing, poor infrastructure, and a lack of structure.

Each of these mistakes delayed my breakthrough.
Not by months. By years.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱

Today, the landscape is completely different from what I faced years ago.

Publishing is faster, cheaper, and truly global.

All you really need is a laptop and clear guidance.

Your story matters more than you think.

Your voice is needed in ways you may not yet see.

A single book can open doors you never imagined.

Most of the barriers that slowed me down no longer exist.

How a 60-Page Book Took Me From Farms to Boardrooms

The first book I ever wrote was small by every measure.
Just 60 pages. Self-published. No publicity. No applause.

Yet that little book quietly changed my life.

At the time, I was far from any boardroom. I was working with peasant farmers in northern Nigeria, exposed daily to poverty, struggle, and limited opportunity. That season forced me to ask deeper questions about leadership, economics, systems, and impact. I wanted to understand how people rise, how businesses grow, and how nations develop.

So I started reading seriously—business books, management books, leadership books, banking and finance. Those books reshaped how I thought. Over time, they gave me the confidence to write with authority.

That first 60-page book took me from the farms to the boardrooms.

Not overnight.
Not dramatically.
But steadily.

People began to see me differently. Conversations changed. Invitations came. I discovered something powerful: a book introduces you before you enter the room.

My second book opened even more doors—into corporate boardrooms, conference stages, and global companies. Today, I’m often introduced not just as Paul, but as an author. That single word changes perception.

Books gave me authority before visibility.
Before social media.
Before personal branding.
Before algorithms.

Writing later led me to Toastmasters International, where I refined my communication, confidence, and stage mastery. Over the years, I’ve trained and spoken to thousands of professionals and worked with demanding corporate executives. None of that would have happened without my books.

Ironically, I came late to social media and digital platforms. I’m still learning. Still growing. But books had already done the heavy lifting.

A CV expires.
A book compounds.

As we approach 2026, I genuinely believe more professionals, founders, and leaders need to document their knowledge. Africa is filled with wisdom that never gets written down.

Depending on where you live, 2025 has just days left.
