We are pleased to announce that we received a favourable judgment in a case filed on behalf of our client against the Attorney General of Lagos State and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police in the High Court of Lagos State, presided over by Honourable Justice O. A. Ogala.
In 2019, our client, Bashir (surname withheld), along with several others, was raided at gunpoint and forcibly taken into a waiting van by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), with no explanation of any crime committed.
For several weeks, they were blindfolded, handcuffed, tortured, starved, and forced to drink their urine at the SARS detention facility located at the Police Headquarters in Ikeja. Tragically, some of those who were illegally arrested did not survive. Our client was pressured to secure his release by paying a bail of N100,000.00. When he was unable to pay, he was quickly arraigned in Magistrates' Court and remanded at Kirikiri Medium Prison, awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on false charges of armed robbery.
For seven long years, our client was incarcerated without bail or trial and was never taken to court to answer the alleged charges against him. During this time, he became a victim of a flawed criminal justice system, losing his mother, being disconnected from his family, and losing his only means of livelihood, all while confined behind bars.
ClickALawyer.NG, through its Justice5000 initiative and led by Jerry Obans, Esq., took on his case in 2024 and provided him with pro bono legal services. On March 30, 2026, the Honourable Court declared his continued detention illegal and ordered his unconditional release.
With support from our partners, we provided him with financial assistance and helped him reconnect with his family outside of Lagos.
