Born in Abeokuta in 1900, Olufunmilayo was among the first Nigerian women to receive a formal education.

As she grew older, she became deeply concerned about the suffering of ordinary women,

especially market women who worked hard every day but were heavily taxed and often treated unfairly.

Instead of accepting the situation, she decided to fight against it.

She organized thousands of women under the Abeokuta Women’s Union and led peaceful protests against unfair taxation and oppression.

Her courage inspired women across the country to stand up for their rights.

The movement became so powerful that it shook the political establishment of the time.

Olufunmilayo was fearless.

She spoke boldly to traditional rulers, colonial authorities, and powerful politicians.

She believed that leadership should serve the people, not exploit them.

Her determination eventually contributed to major political changes in Abeokuta and strengthened the fight for women’s rights in Nigeria.

Because of her courage and influence,

many people began to call her

“The Lioness of Lisabi.”

But her impact did not stop there.

She became one of Nigeria’s leading voices for democracy and social justice.

She travelled widely,

met world leaders, and continued to advocate for a better society where women could participate fully in public life.

Olufunmilayo was also the mother of the legendary musician and activist Fela Kuti.

Many believe that the courage and rebellious spirit that made Fela famous were qualities he inherited from his remarkable mother.

S@dly, her l!fe ended after she su*fered
!njuries during a mil!tary r@id on her son Fela’s residence in 1977.

She p@ssed the following year.

Yet her leg@cy remains alive

Today, whenever Nigerian women speak up for their rights, whenever citizens demand accountability from leaders,

and whenever people refuse to accept injustice, the spirit of Olufunmilayo Ransome-Kuti lives on.

She proved that one determined woman can

Did you know that Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), a prominent Nigerian human rights lawyer, activist, and critic of military dictatorships, is widely regarded as the most detained Nigerian in history?

He was arrested and detained approximately 32 times between 1969 and 2001 (with some accounts noting over 30 to 40 instances of harassment, arrests, or detentions up to the late 1990s).

It was told how he had an ever-ready bag containing some clothes, singlets and toothpaste and brush for his usual journeys to detention.

Under different regimes:

👉He faced 6 detentions under Yakubu Gowon.
👉He faced 3 under Olusegun Obasanjo (as military head).
👉He faced a record 17 under Ibrahim Babangida.
👉He faced 9 under Abacha.
👉 He was also detained during Ernest Shonekan’s brief Interim National Government period.

These arrests and detention were often without formal charges involving police cells, prisons, passport seizures (at least 10 times), raids on his home/office, and harassment for his legal work, public criticism, and pro-democracy activism.

Fawehinmi lived between 1938 and 2009 and earned nicknames like 'the people’s lawyer' and 'Senior Advocate of the Masses'.

From Kidnapping to Political Demands?
The Oyo State House of Assembly has revealed the demands reportedly made by the bandits who kidnapped 40 students and teachers in Oyo State.
According to the Assembly, the kidnappers are demanding:
• ₦1 billion to be paid into an account in the Republic of Benin.
• The release of other bandits being held in Agodi and Abolongo prisons.
• Two Hilux vehicles.
• Amendments to certain Oyo State laws to favour their interests.
The nature of these demands raises serious concerns. Beyond ransom, they appear to be seeking influence, leverage, and long-term strategic advantages.
Given Oyo's vast mineral resources, some observers believe this could be more than a simple kidnapping operation. The question is: are these criminals merely after money, or are they pursuing a broader agenda?

Why Tinubu should empower the Alafin of Yorubaland and the Shehu of Borno to improve security.

It is not even about whether Tinubu fails but to what degree?

42 children in Oyo and 40 in Borno shows a pattern that must be taken seriously.

The worst place for Tinubu to fail is in his home southwest and Northeast which happens to be the home of the Vice President and these are where these escalating insecurity is rooting.

The military is already overstretched and deployment of heavy apparatus and personnel down south isn’t very recommended for the avoidance of collateral.

The empowerment of local leaders should top the priority to see if the situation can be contained especially as the mainstream leaders focus on election, traditional rulers can temporarily play security role.

We can start with the Shehu in northeast and the Alafin in Yorubaland see the result and expand the approach. This is crucial as the Alafin’s throne is adapted to tackle the kind of security situation currently being experienced.

This was the Laguna of Oyo Kingdom in 1971. This photo was taken the same year that Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi III was crowned.

In the Oyo Empire, the Lagunna (or Laguna) is a high-ranking, hereditary chief who serves as a key member of the Oyo Mesi. The Oyo Mesi are the seven principal councilors and kingmakers responsible for selecting the Alaafin (king) of Oyo and representing the voice of the people.

Historically and culturally, the Lagunna holds specific roles in the traditional government. The Lagunna acts as a roving ambassador or state messenger for the Alaafin. Alongside leaders like the Bashorun (Prime Minister), Agbaakin, and Alapini, the Lagunna is directly responsible for checking the king's power and advising on crucial affairs of the state.

He is also the head of the Orisha Oko worshipers, a prominent religious society within the region. This governing system traces its roots back to the old Oyo-Ile era and continues to play an important advisory role in the traditional Yoruba structure.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd), shares his thoughts on the Oyo school abduction, Nigeria's worsening insecurity, hostage rescue operations, and the fight against terrorism and banditry.

When asked during his interview on ‘Beyond The Headlines’, “why bandits record videos, they show their faces they even make calls. Sometimes they livestream; why does it appear that criminals communicate so openly while security agents still struggle to locate and neutralize them.”

Buratai answered (in part), “I don't think security operatives failed to locate bandits, if they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don't believe they cannot locate these bandits. What i know is that there must be capacity building for all the security agencies, we need opeartives, more policemen; more troops need to be recruited. They need to trained, welfare is very important.”

*Our History, Our Pain, Our Strength ✊🏿*

Africans, look at these images.

This is how our grandmothers and grandfathers were treated during the colonial period. Strangers came to our land, took our dignity, and reduced our people to objects for their cameras and their stories. They stood clothed, in control, while our mothers and fathers stood exposed, powerless, stripped not just of clothing but of respect and humanity.

They called it "study." They called it "civilization." But it was humiliation. It was exploitation. It was the system of colonialism that saw African life as less valuable than their curiosity.

We cannot change what happened. But we must never forget. These images are not just old photos - they are reminders of why we fight for our dignity, our land, and our voice today.

Our ancestors endured this so that we could stand tall, speak for ourselves, and write our own story. Let their pain fuel our unity. Let their silence be broken by our voices now.

Africa will never be the same again. We remember. We rise.

The Governor Tried To Remove His Own King.
A Coup Saved The Throne — By Two Days.
This is one of the most dramatic power struggles in modern Nigerian history.
And most Nigerians have never heard of it.
It started with a letter.

In August 1981, Oba Sikiru Adetona wrote to Ogun State Governor Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, notifying him of an upcoming trip to London for medical reasons, including his overseas address and phone number. It was purely informative. Not a request for permission.
The Governor did not see it that way.
Onabanjo replied demanding more details, apparently implying that the trip needed his approval. Oba Adetona bristled, reminding him that his letter was purely a courtesy update and that as a traditional monarch, he did not require permission to travel.
It was a small exchange between two powerful men.
But it lit a fuse that would burn for three years.

What made it even more extraordinary?

Both men were eminent sons of Ijebuland. Years before politics, they had been close friends. Onabanjo had once fallen ill and it was Oba Adetona himself who arranged accommodation and support for him while he studied in London.
The governor was not just removing a king.
He was removing the king who had once taken care of him.
Then the governor acted.

On November 23, 1981, Oba Adetona was suspended from office as the Awujale of Ijebuland. Onabanjo set up a commission of inquiry to probe the affairs of the suspended monarch. The commission quickly recommended his deposition.
Other Yoruba monarchs called.
They pleaded with Oba Adetona to back down.
He refused.
He changed his telephone number.
The Awujale of Ijebuland would not be moved.
A legal battle followed.
The monarch initiated a legal battle led by the late Fatayi Williams against the validity of the Sogbetun commission of inquiry.
The case dragged on.
The deposition loomed.
The removal was scheduled to take effect on January 2, 1984.
Oba Adetona had days left on his throne.

Then, at the last possib
