Babajide Sanwo-Olu's journey to becoming the Governor of Lagos State is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and passion for public service. Born on June 25, 1965, Sanwo-Olu's early life laid the foundation for his future successes. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Surveying and Geo-Informatics and an MBA from the University of Lagos, setting him up for a stellar career.
Sanwo-Olu's professional journey began in the banking sector, where he held key positions in institutions such as Lead Merchant Bank, United Bank for Africa, and First City Monument Bank. His expertise and leadership skills earned him recognition, and he transitioned to public service, serving as Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to the Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
In 2007, Sanwo-Olu was appointed Commissioner for Establishments, Training, and Pensions, marking the beginning of his impactful public service career. He later became the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), where he showcased his ability to drive development and growth.
Sanwo-Olu's gubernatorial journey began in 2019 when he emerged as the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and subsequently won the election. As Governor, he has prioritized infrastructure development, transportation, education, and healthcare, transforming Lagos State into a hub of growth and innovation.
One of his most notable achievements is the launch of the Lagos Blue Line Rail, West Africa's first intra-city electric train, which has improved urban mobility and signaled Lagos' readiness for modernization. Sanwo-Olu has also invested in road infrastructure, with over 172 roads completed and 253 projects underway, covering nearly 298 kilometers of roads and 5.64 kilometers of bridges.
Sanwo-Olu's leadership style is characterized by simplicity, humility, and a willingness to engage with various stakeholders. His accommodative stances are evident in the way he has worked with different groups, fostering a sense of unity and cooperation. He has built strong relationships with local government chairmen and other appointees, empowering them to deliver effective governance and services to the people.
Through his relationships and leadership approach, Sanwo-Olu has created a conducive environment for collaboration and progress. His humility and willingness to listen have earned him recognition and respect from various stakeholders, including traditional leaders, party members, and civil society groups. As Governor, Sanwo-Olu continues to drive development and growth, cementing his place as one of Nigeria's most effective leaders.
Though only met him once at Abuja liason Office during national convention, my only hope before his government end in 2027 is to meet this living Legend of our time.
