A parent once asked me:

β€œSir, how can my child become very good at Mathematics?”

My answer was simple:

β€œStop being afraid of Mathematics.”

The parent looked at me.

I continued.

A child who believes Mathematics is impossible will approach every question with fear.

A child who believes mistakes mean they're not intelligent will avoid difficult questions.

A child who believes only β€œnaturally gifted” people can do Mathematics may give up before trying.

Before improving Mathematics skills...

We sometimes need to improve the child's relationship with Mathematics.

Make them curious.

Let them ask questions.

Let them make mistakes.

Let them try again.

Celebrate understanding, not just scores.

Because Mathematics isn't reserved for a special group of human beings.

It's a language.

And like every language...

It can be learned.

One concept at a time.

One mistake at a time.

One breakthrough at a time.

That's the kind of Mathematics environment I want to create.

Before I teach a difficult Mathematics topic, there's one thing I want to know.

Not the student's score.

Not their grade.

Not even how many questions they can solve.

I want to know:

β€œWhere did Mathematics start becoming difficult for you?”

Because Mathematics is connected.

A child struggling with algebra may actually have a problem with basic operations.

A student struggling with fractions may not properly understand division.

Someone struggling with equations may have forgotten the meaning of equality.

And sometimes...

The problem started years ago.

That's why I don't believe every Mathematics problem can be solved by simply giving more questions.

Sometimes you need to go backwards before you can move forward.

Find the missing foundation.

Fix it.

Then continue.

That's exactly how I approach my classes at The Math Clinic.

I don't just want to teach the next topic.

I want to find the mathematical problem.

Diagnose it.

Treat it.

And help the student move forward.
