A Conversation That Got Me Thinking About the Future of Our Youth
A few days ago, I was talking with three young men working for me. They are hardworking, respectful, and always ready to do any job assigned to them.
During our conversation, I asked them a simple question.
"How much do you earn in a day?"
They answered, "About β¦7,000, whenever there is work."
I asked another question.
"How many days do you work in a month?"
They said, "Around 20 days."
I quickly did the calculation and told them, "That means each of you earns about β¦140,000 every month."
Then I asked, "How much have you saved? What business are you planning to start so that one day you won't have to depend on daily labour?"
They looked at one another and smiled.
One of them replied, "Oga, life is hard. Before the month ends, the money has finished."
I understood that everyone has responsibilities. Food is expensive, transportation costs money, and many people support their families. But I also told them something from my heart.
I said, "I don't want you to work for me forever. The greatest joy for any employer is to see the people working with him grow, become independent, and build successful lives of their own."
I explained that many people believe the only solution is to earn more money. But sometimes the real solution is learning how to manage the money we already earn.
If you spend everything that enters your hand, your life may remain the same year after year. Even if your income increases, your expenses can increase with it if you have no financial discipline.
Every successful entrepreneur started somewhere. Most didn't begin with millions. They started by saving, learning, sacrificing, and taking small steps consistently.
You may not be able to save a large amount every month, but saving something is better than saving nothing. Small, consistent savings can become the capital for a business tomorrow.
My advice to every young person is this:
Don't be satisfied with earning daily wages for the rest of your life. Let your current job prepare you for something greater. Learn a skill. Save part of your income. Invest in yourself. Start a small business when you can, and keep growing.
Hard work is important, but hard work without planning, saving, and wise financial decisions may not change your future.
Remember, your current job should be a stepping stone, not a permanent destination.
May we all have the wisdom to build a better tomorrow with the opportunities we have today.
